Car seller scam

I am on the lookout for a cheap under 3K car and found a curious post on craigs list for a 2005 Toyota Avalon for $2495 and sent the seller an email. And I got this reply from a "Lucas Ackerman":
Hello, If you are interested in my 2005 Toyota Avalon, I must mention that it is in perfect condition, has no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever. It has 22,638 miles and the VIN # is :4T1BK36B05U050843. It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. I have the pictures hosted on the net and you can see them at : http://s429.photobucket.com/albums/qq18/2005AvalonTouring/?albumview=slideshow. The car is located in Houston, TX. The price is $2,495 and there are no other costs regarding this transaction. I am selling the car because I am in the army and my unit will be deployed to Afghanistan next month. I will buy a new one when I'll be back home so this car needs to go. The transaction will be closed only through a 3rd party because this way we will both be protected. My time is limited due to my job in the army so I decided to use a service from AlertPay which will serve as our 3rd escrow party in this transaction. To begin the transaction I'll need your full name and shipping address, I will forward the details of our transaction to AlertPay and then you will receive an invoice from them. The car will be shipped insured to your location with DAS and you will have 5 days for inspection, I will pay for shipping.
I figured there was something particularly fishy about this and asked him how he's able to sell it so cheap and got this reply:
I am selling the car so cheap because I am in the army, and my unit will be deployed to Afghanistan in the next month. The car will be shipped trough DAS, they will deliver you the car in front of your door in 3-5 business days. Since my brother in law works at DAS he promised me that it will cost me nothing to ship it to you so the total price including the shipping fees is $2,495. Let me explain you how the AlertPay process works: 1. You send the payment to an AlertPay representative. 2. AlertPay will confirm me that you have made the deposit. 3. I will ship the car so you can Inspect, test the car and make a decision if you will keep it or not. 4. If the car is not as described or there is something wrong with it I will pay the shipping back and you will have a full refund from AlertPay. 5. If everything is ok AlertPay will get the approval from you to release me the funds. If yo

Here's what I would do: 1. Trace the originating IP. Make sure he is in the USA if you can. 2. Carry on with the conversation, and go ask the police if they want to catch in the act. Else tell him about your Lieutenant cousin in Afghanistan.

I had a similar experience a few months back. The poster was allegedly in the Air Force stationed in Guam. I took the VIN and called the DMV in Virginia and several surrounding states. It was not found, indicating that it was either an invalid VIN to begin with or the vehicle was in a flood/hurricane and the VIN then became invalidated. The poster also made a claim on behalf of eBay (even though the car was not listed on eBay). I contacted eBay and they assured me they had no part in such an offer. When I replied to the poster with these two findings, he mysteriously disappeared.
