A couple of devs here have replaced Vista or XP with the Windows 7 beta, and are saying how great it is, now using it as their primary OS. I tried it through VPC 2007, and yeah, it's nice, but I can't really use it under Virtual PC for day-to-day use. So, any CPians have experience living on the bleeding edge and using Windows 7 as their primary OS? Is it insane to rely on the Win7 beta for day-to-day activity?

I tried to install it on my one and only home Windows PC (I use OS X day to day), but it hung while 'expanding files' - no Windows 7 for me :-(

Maybe when I was in college (I would consider a microsoft beta os as the primary) but that started 20 years ago..

Well, honestly, other than needing to make sure your code compiles and works well under it, is there anything that compelling to do so? It sounds like the performance improvements will make it worth moving to once it's released, but other than that, why bother? They still don't have WinFS right?

If somehow Vista had managed to sneak up on me and become my primary OS, I would have replaced it with Windows 7 for sure (since basically it's the same, but faster) It's probably quite insane, there must be loads of bugs eagerly waiting for the worst possible time to manifest themselves :)

Yeah, the "loads of bugs" is my thought too. But everyone's saying how it's the most stable beta MS has ever put out, and how it's running without problems for so many. Wanted to hear if anyone's had experience otherwise.

I'm running on my desktop at home, it replaced Vista ultimate. Seems very stable, no crashes yet. I also have it on a laptop at work for testing, also stable with no compatibility issues.

Yes I'm crazy enough to use it as my primary OS but have my old system backed up and can revert at any time. In my case Windows 7 has been fairly stable and haven't had many problems at all with it. (A few apps wouldn't load but I can work around them) I like it and am able to do all my developing on it without problems and can work at home over VPN so have no complaints. (Knock on wood) Mike

I had to read that twice. At first I thought I read "most stable OS MS has ever put out." That would be high praise indeed considering how solid 2K and 2003 have been.

I am running it as the primary OS on my laptop, but I also have a complete, verified backup of the old system. So far, so good - no crashes - but I haven't really pushed it that hard yet. I've only used my laptop for some light activities when I didn't feel like being tied to my desk, like code updates, documentation writing, and a bit of web browsing, mostly. I've been able to run all my required software so far, and there were drivers available for everything, though not all of them were in the box.

I've been trying to get one of my co-workers to do so, mostly out of a desire for cheap entertainment. I wouldn't mind giving it a shot myself, but the lack of one key utility program (VPN client) makes this unlikely in the near future.

It's being widely used within MS and it is much more stable and speedy than prior beta releases of Windows. Apparently, although I haven't tried it on my laptop, connecting to WiFi networks is blazingly fast.

That's really good to hear. I'm don't really use Vista (I have it), but I'm expecting that when Win7 is released I'll be switching to it from XP for good then.

I guess part of the answer and question should specify what is normal activities. I have dual boot Vista64U and Windows 7. Both are rock solid and fast. I am still alternating between them. Vista is still the primary, but so far I have found no reason that would prevent me from switching tomorrow.

I plan to here shortly. Have a few things to get finished up and then will swap out the HD with another one to instal W7 on and give it a go. Curious of how well all the apps will install, but from what I hear there are no big issues. The old Vista Beta/RC was no big problems so I do not expect any with W7.

Yes, and it's really nice to use. MagicDisc nearly stuffed my installation by stopping windows explorer from seeing drive C but everything's back to normal now I've got rid of it.

I'm running on my desktop at home, it replaced Vista ultimate. Seems very stable, no crashes yet. I also have it on a laptop at work for testing, also stable with no compatibility issues.

Does the Vista drivers work for Windows 7? I am also thinking about installing it on my laptop but not too sure about the drivers?
