Sweet! The entire archive of the national film board of Canada was just put online. We used to see them shown on the CBC (national broadcaster) between programs, in light of the bitching that went on here today and by way of apology for taking this all too seriously I present a particularly funny and semi appropriate one: http://www.nfb.ca/film/The-Big-Snit/[^] And no trip to the NFB would be complete without the very funny and ultra classic: http://www.nfb.ca/film/the-cat-came-back/[^]

I bought their DVD way back in 2000 or so. It became damaged, so I just replaced it with their "Animation Greats" 2 pack. Black Fly is another really good one. Actually most of their stuff is pretty good. Cheers, Drew.

I, here in UK, saw The Cat Came Back about 20 years ago, and it was excellent, I have never seen it since. Thanks for reminding me, I will attempt to get that.

It was shown on the cartoon programme with Tony Robinson and there were so many repeat requests that they showed it again the next week. Classic.

Don't forget about the Log Drivers Waltz, now that is a classic. :)

I'm glad someone mentioned that. How many songs can you still sing every word, even though you haven't heard the song for probably a decade or two? The old NFB stuff is fantastic!

My personal favourite is the one about the young lad who lives in a small village in northern Quebec and when he and all his friends play hockey on the pond, they all wear Montreal Candiens jerseys. Except that he doesn't have a jersey, so one is ordered for him from the Eaton's christmas catalog. When the package arrives, to his dismay it is a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey instead. So cruel and funny at the same time. :)

Both the "Black Fly Song" and the "Log Drivers Waltz" were written by Wade Hemsworth. Wade sings the Black Fly with Kate and Anna McGarrigle singing backup. Kate and Anna sing the Log Drivers Waltz. Very fine singers and he is a wonderful songwriter.

Ok... that made me laugh. Growing up in Northern Ontario where we could watch the Canadiens in either English or French, we were, by default, Canadien fans. Getting a Maple Leaf jersey is just a cruel, cruel joke... Tim
