It's probably best if I don't get drawn into this argument, as I tend to lose my  so I will try adn make this my first and last statement here, but the difference between Man and the rest of the animal kingdom is that Man has a choice in how he acts - it is that fact that we do these things knowingly and of our own free will that makes us "the most dreadful and gruesome beast"

The main problem is the food fascists who try to change what I eat because they don't like it. They moan on about veal and try to get it banned. F*ck 'em, I like veal. I like pate de fois gras, I like braised duckling etc. What I eat is my business. I make a point of ordering Rare Steaks if I know there are vegetarians around, after all, I care for our plant friends and hate to see them abused.

Nah, and I don't plan to, either, but frog legs are really good.

We have to eat and just because, for whatever reason (cultural? Veggie?), you don't eat frogs, does not make eating frogs any more disgusting than any other animal which humans, as top of the food chain, feel the need to eat. Personally I'll eat pretty much anything that is dead; from roadkill rabbit (yummy) to chocolate ants to alligator to ostrich. It's just food: get over yourself.

I suppose the local name is Pill Bug, cause they roll into little 'pills'. (Bedfordshire) My Wife (Born and Raised a Kentish Girl), calls them Monkey Pigs(!). (Kent) Her Mum and Dad are Glaswegians, and I know he calls them Chuggy Pigs (!!) (Scotland) I have no answer as to why they are known as so many different things.

I propose moving this discussion (Vegies vs Meat) over to the Soapbox. I'm really interested in reading arguments from both sides, but things could get hot and those don't belong here.

I am not saying this in the context of eating. Just for the sake of taste, wiping out a species! I don't think a wise man would do that. And no I am not a vegetarian. And I don't think the Tiger (Top of the food chain) would hunt the deers recklessly to extinction.

I am sorry but that is nonsense! 1 tiger, very hungry, last deer on earth walks in front. Tiger: Oh, look, the last deer on earth. I'll just sit here and die quietly so that it can live. Nonsense! However, as far as is known, tigers do not process such abstract concepts, we do. We have had many warnings, such as the recent crisis in global fishing and the near extinction of many whale species, but continue to perpetuate the same flawed actions. Why? So that someone can make some money, in most cases. There are still some peoples that are so remote from 'civilization' that they are unaware of the global situation and for them, and them alone, there is, possibly, some excuse. Having said that, many of these remote peoples would not cause the extinction of local species, they are far too intelligent and most have no profit motive.

The 27th is my next hearing and it should be their last because for the last 5 they haven't been providing witnesses, so if they don't this time as well, then it'll be our turn to fight back. Just a comment about that. Certainly no tiger will consciously not kill the last deer on earth (I'm reminded by Marilyn Manson;s song) but the population of tigers would have suffered by the time the deer population would have fallen to that level, giving the deer a chance to boost their numbers which provides a surplus for the tigers the following seasons making their numbers grow and so on.

I expected that argument. Yes, humans have some choice. How much? Whatever choice we make, we will influence our environment. Whatever choice I make, my survival will harm some other beings, plants or dead shapes of nature. We are about 6.76 billion. Just feeding us and keeping us warm when we are cold will affect many beings. We can harm more, or less, but we will always do harm. To be the gentle folk of sustainable almost-non-invasive lifestyle we wish to be, we'd have to kill of 6.7 billions of ourselves. Hardly an alternative. IMO only the choice you mention separates us from the cruel midless beast, but that choice doesn't come for free. It is hard, it costs energy, and it needs to be reinforced again and again. Still, I am willing to argue that, on the average, humans are less cruel than many animals and plants. Of course you can define "cruel" as "applies to humans only", but then that definition is pointless.
