Windows 7: my first impressions

Hi Joan, Did you use the 32bit or 64bit. I'm actually going to install this today (if I can find a way to save my Daughters "SIMS" game settings :doh: ).

I run Vista in a Core 2 Duo 6600 2.40 2.40. The vista experience level is 4,7 in that computer. The other computer in the company running Vista is my laptop: HP EliteBook 8530p : the vista experience level is 5,2 here... both computers running Vista have 2GB RAM. Windows 7 is running in a computer that is very old (Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM)...

Hello all, After reading the exciting post of Judah Himango regarding the great results of Windows 7, This weekend I've installed it in my home computer (Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM) in order to try it. By now what I can say is that: - It starts incredibly fast. - Its memory consumption is under 320 MB. - IT reacts fast in all the things I've tried. - It is great to see that it can handle DIVX automatically without having to install external softwares. - The way to dock windows on the sides is handy if you have only one monitor. - The new task bar allows you to search for the right window easily and fast. - I can see the time and the date at the right of the task bar. - The Network configuration is really easy. - Even I've not had many problems with the Vista UAC, the new one seems better, at least it doesn't seem to bother you 3 times per request. - The new media player seems better: it is small when you double click a media file and it is as the old one (with plenty of features that usually I don't use) when you open it from the start menu. - The jump lists are handy... The best for me: it is FAST. I've not had problems with vista at all, only some times, but small things at much (except the explorer, that is sluggish on my work computers). But I would like to be able to use the new Windows 7 soon, really I think it is a good great improvement. :thumbsup:

It's an interesting point, that.. It seems to happen to every installation of Windows I've ever had.. I wonder if the same will happen to W7 too :doh: I guess it also depends on the apps you install - installing a bundle of badly written ones or resource-hungry ones can't be good on either boot time or performance. Who knows... but probably you are right and as all the windows till today it will become slower after some time.

XP is a wonderful OS. This is clear, I loved it always. Comparing the Vista explorer with the XP explorer is a bad joke. In my case, for what I've been able to test, the explorer in Windows 7 is again responsive... so it's like having all the cool things in vista but fast again.

Yes for what I've been able to see. There are some things to consider here: - In my house I don't have any anti-virus software. - I have installed the OS and almost nothing else, I use the home computer to see my pictures, some films and to play some games (I've installed a couple of them and they work properly). But there is no special software that starts automatically, only the acrobat reader checking of new versions.

Not at home... the rules are quite similar to the ones that are in the Lounge... :-D There nobody asks programming questions and I have forbidden to install programming software... I'll try them on a virtual machine the next week (I hope) and let's see what happen.

Does it have all the dev required thingies, like IIS? Will I be able to install Visual Studio, Office, and SQL Server?

Don't know about IIS, Visual Studio or SQL server... as it is my home computer I don't have working tools there and I've not tried it. But office works there perfectly. I guess that the best would be trying it into a virtual machine environment.

I've installed VS2008 on 32bit W7 in a VM. So far so good ;) , though I've not built our software product yet, that'll probably be this week. When I installed a development build of Visual Lint on W7, all seemed to be okay. So I'll agree with Joan, the UI is great to use, networking is smooth, UAC with its slide bar. So, I'm looking forward to the OS when its release.. but on a P4, what's your Windows Experience Index?

Some of the devs at my work have VS 2008 and SQL server installed, works fine. I don't know about IIS.

No as it is the home computer I can afford to screw it and reformat it if needed and by now it works perfect. The only thing that is a pity is that it will stop working this august... Let's hope that the beta 2 and the newcomers will continue being as good as this one... (at least, of course)... ;P

Yes, I have SQL2005 express and SQL2008 express, VS2008 and Office 2003 on mine...no problems! Mike

It's been my experience with XP that when it does this, it has something to do with network connections. We have a NAS at the office that sometimes gets bogged down and is dog-slow. I have a couple of mapped network drives that point to it, and it will cause Windows Explorer to "hang" for 30 seconds or more at a time. If I disconnect the drive mappings, the "hang" will disappear.
