[rant] It snowed last night and then added a few hours of light freezing rain and every thing is covered with 1 inch of ice. I have 20 miles to get to work and would bet anyone that the city of Pittsburgh did not salt even the main roads (let alone side streets) since they have almost no budget and usually leave everyone to fend for themselves.. So I'd expect this trip in to work to be a bit of adventure. And if you do not know Pittsburgh is built on hills and to get anywhere you have to go up and down a few... Well enough delaying its 9:25 here.. [/rant]

I thought you said wheel chair, that would go with bad tires instead of good tires. :)

Just save yourself the journey by calling in now to say that you crashed the car on the way in.

Words fade as the meanings change, but somehow, it don't bother me.

This is why I think employers need to consider allowing employees to work from home more. There's so much technology that can make this work.

Everything was covered with half inch of ice in my area. But once you got onto the highway it wasn't so bad. Schools, governments, some companies are closed. Not my company, it has not closed its door due to bad weather for more than 25 years. Our slogan is "Sales, Sales, Sales, Service, Service, Service", it really should be "Get to work, dead or alive".

Working from home is considered a favor to employees in my company. During the dot com boom, many employees were allowed to work from home because the company wanted to attract good people. Now it is a much tougher job market, the company take that and many other things, including pension plan, away.

It used to be that policy here. For years the last thing open was City Hall. In the last couple years, they've actually closed at noon several times due to storms. Policy is employees must TRY to come to work, or use a vacation day, even if it's obvious it will close down. FWIW, we have very good street crews, and are prepared for ice and snow here.

how hard do you have to try and do they have any way of checking up on you? eg "Sorry boss, I tried to come in, nearly went off the road/wrecked three times within the first quarter mile before giving up and turning around; while you actually never got father than the hot cup of coffee in your kitchen..."

Good luck. We only got a glazing of ice in Johnstown, thankfully there wasn't enough freezing rain to cement the sleet and snow layers together.

As I did that on my driveway (even after clearing most of it and a 40lb bag of salt mix). I was actually thinking of that song. Until I had to descend the mountain I live on.. Then I was thinking why did I get myself into this I could have took a sick day. Even at less than 5 MPG it was scary.

Usually depends on the person. But they can check up on the plows and salt trucks and see if the road had been clean at the time. I've had my side street 1ft deep in snow and barely passable, while the main streets are bare.

[/rant]

I made it. It was not as bad as I thought only because the rain had turned from freezing rain to just a normal light rain. This and the traffic had taken care of most of the ice on the main roads although they were still slippery and there were areas of 4 inches of water but I was going slow and letting any one go around me at 65 (in a 40 zone) if they wanted..

I don't even have a cell phone any more. It got damaged in a different type of adventure (bike riding / flat tire 18 miles on a trail from home and then a powerful lightning storm hit in the woods with no clear path to cover...)

Good luck. We only got a glazing of ice in Johnstown, thankfully there wasn't enough freezing rain to cement the sleet and snow layers together.

Thanks. It was a little scary getting off the mountain but after that it was ok. I definitely driven in worse conditions this winter.
