Actually, if you follow Atkins strictly, cholesterol and blood pressure decreases. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_research_related_to_low-carbohydrate_diets[^]

This is why you are fat.[^] This page reads like a list of things I want for lunch. Doh!, now I'm hungry. Least we've got some rice crispy treats in the office.

Do people seriously eat that excrement? I mean really? In this day and age with all we know about health and truly good food? I guess some people go out and buy cheap chocolate bars and think they're eating "chocolate" as well. And some people actually start their day with a coke so I shouldn't be surprised. For the price of one of those you can go and buy a fresh chicken some potatoes and carrots and onions and make a delicious, healthy meal with leftovers for a day or two.

I agree that it sounds counter-intuitive, based on what we've been told for the last 40+ years by our revered government ("low fat is really good for you"). However, it wouldn't be the first time the government has steered us in the wrong direction or worse. It seems that the longer we listen to the low fat evangelists, the fatter we get. There is support for the idea that different people respond differently to different diets, but here are a few references to articles in accepted peer reviewed journals that tend to support the low carb ideology. Iris Shai, R.D., Ph.D. (July 2008). "Weight Loss with a Low-Carbohydrate, Mediterranean, or Low-Fat Diet.". New England Journal of Medicine 359:229-241. Christopher D. Gardner, PhD (March 2007). 'Struth. I did Atkins for about eight months with about 20 minutes of moderate exercise (dance) each day. I lost 20 pounds in three months, maintained the same weight during the months I didn't have the time to exercise, then lost another eight pounds during the month I got back on the exercise program. I cholesterol went down as did my BP. After about a week I lost the craving for carbs. The only downside is not being able to plan your meals everywhere you went.
