Mixed Linux and Windows Network

Does your workplace/company has a mix of linux (or for that matter another non windows os) and windows network? What are non windows machine for? Are you affected by it in any way?
We have our file server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and all the other computers in the company run Linux. We have Win98, WinXp and Vista running in the network. Everything works like charm... Some times seems that the server locks some file and I need to reassign the privileges, but it is not a major issue...

our software is cross platform, Windows and Linux usually. Theoretically it would also run on BSD or OSX with a full recompile, but there would probably be issues. So we run dual platforms across the board.

Our Subversion and Trac servers are Apache2 on a Linux box. The rest of the network is all Windows. Actually, the SVN repositories reside on a backed-up Windows share that is used by Linux via smbmount. All works great. BTW, the Linux box has not been rebooted since it was set up over a year ago. I can't say the same for the Windows servers.

Funny you should mention that. Just this morning I was considering whether it would be easier for me to have a home network that would have a Linux replacement for ISA server acting as the gateway, this way I could secure my home network of which all computers and laptops with the exception of one computer, run various Windows versions.

All the servers which contain 20 TB of data storage (software raid 5 /6), cvs/svn, web servers, wiki, backup servers / tape archives, ftp, dicom are on all on linux.

We have Unix (not sure which flavor...) boxes running Oracle. I know nothing about them, other than that the Oracle databases are rarely ever unavailable (and that it would be a dark day if they ever were). I'm certainly not trying to do any sort of AD authentication on them! On rare occasions, i've used various Linux-based live CDs to access workstations when backing up / rebuilding one of my boxes. It's always worked well enough that i haven't bothered to look into the details.

No I have been going back and forth between this idea of having an old machine converted to Linux to host the svn server/database. My network administrator is scared of putting any non windows stuff on network. So Ima trying to get a feel of how common is this practice.

on public accessible network or private intranet? the US DoD only allows windows on public nets, but private nets can have anything, and often do have complete mixes of Linux, OSX, BSD, Solaris, Windows, etc. Soon Vista will be added to the mix.
