OK, from the previous post, How many here actually OWN a slide rule, and can you use them? (I have one, and yes, I can use it). Actually I am reminded of an old physics teacher who pointed out that the calculations regarding a particular experiment were fairly simple, and "Didn't require a bucket of water in which to cool the slide rules!"

I've got one somewhere and, yes, I think i can still remember how to use it... ...'hit the nerdy kid around the head until he tells you the answer'

I know I have one some where in the attic. I know how to use it as well. May be it is time to find it and teach my son how to use it.

I own a few and used them before. I had a math class that would allow them to be used on tests instead of an electronic calculator. The professors premise was that if you could use a slide rule then you were at least still using your brain and still had to have a good understanding of the underlying methodology of the math you were doing. He didn't teach us to use it in class though, you had to learn\know that yourself. Glad I had a grandfather that loved his and was always afraid of being able to get things done 'after the bombs dropped' :)

I just get a feeling that only people of 40 years plus will have/have used them!

I'm 40, but have the feeling that it's more like 50+ in general.

I have one in my drawer. That and my abacus become my emergency backup computer. :) I show it to the young kids around here just to see their response.

I've got one in a drawer somewhere at my parent's house that my Dad gave me. He tried to explain how it worked, but I never really got my head around it. I keep meaning to get a decent abacus, and train myself to use it Chinese-style

Yeah, that's what they teach, but when using the logarithmic scales properly, you really can do addition with it. Great invention, too bad non-sliding computers are taking over. :)
