Is there a reason for the message deletion? Is it someone manipulating the site?
This is probably the result of complaints by the employers of some of the people who have been wasting their time here instead of working.

Well, in regards to the racist posts - I think it's appropriate to delete them. A number of professionals visit this site and I don't think it needs to contain rasicst posts. It's bad for the reputation of the website itself. So there should be some element of decorum and decency. I don't think it quite matters whose posts are being deleted - be they yours or other peoples. My opinion would be to just leave them and have the option to either respond or just move on. But I don't make the rules.

I certainly understand that, I'm just not sure it is wise ... especially if one desires that CSS see and correct the error of his attitudes. On the other hand, one can no more reason with CSS on certain matters than one can with most of "the community" on certain matters.

Some time ago, I raised the complaint that the automatic removal of posts by abuse votes amounted to a form of vigilantism, and empowered the wrong people as much as it did any others. I was quite soundly drubbed for that observation, but I think it still holds true. I sympathize with those who wan to reduce the extent to which Ilion spams this board with link-only or link and quote only posts, and with his arrogant and disrespectful treatment of others, but handing enforcement to the self-elected, has never been a good policy, and has always degenerated into the kind of phenomenon that the past month or so's "wipe out Ilion" activity typifies. It was Chris' expressed wish that the soapbox denizens enforce their own discipline, so that he and his employees would not have to. An understandable desire on his part, but this seems not to have been the solution, since it remains open to abuse of many kinds.

It would appear this is simply a glitch in the programming, rather than a failure of the concept. The fact is that since Chris changed the word to make it clear was was being voted on, and perhaps lowered the number of votes needed, Troy has disappeared at least three times, leaving us without his Spam for a week or more, each time. Note that Stan, who I have long and strong diagreements with, doesn't get eliminated, because he doesn't abuse the site, he merely expresses an opinion. All in all, I'd say that the community has shown great good sense in who it has deleted as opposed to those who simply garned a number of 1 votes.

I don't know - it would be nice to just read the threads instead of having them disappear seemingly at random. It's rather annoying, to be honest. The ones I don't want to read I'd rather just skip them instead of seeing them deleted. But that's just my opinion. And, unless it's clearly racist, I'm not in favour of deleting messages. I think there was one by CSS that I asked to be removed because it was racist.
