I'm sitting here at my desk getting ready to start coding. The thought crossed my mind, "I wonder what the people at the Code Project listen to while they code." (Yeah... I might be stalling just a little bit...) I'm not asking what you like in general, but more when you are in the process of coding (Is there a difference?). Do you find that certain types of music help with coding vs debugging? I'm afraid that the answer will be similar to my answer to this question... Depends on the day. If I'm trying to figure something out, then I like it as quiet as possible. If it's just grunt work, then I like just about anything lively. What I can't do is listen to books on tape. It's a little to much distraction. Anyway, I'm curious to know what works for y'all.

Classical if I'm thinking hard or trying to create an interesting algorithm. Rock if I'm just coding along and don't have to think much about it.

Anything and everything. For the heavy stuff though, it has to be hard rock or metal. :-\

When I'm reading non-code material, I can't listen to music at all. When actually programming, if I'm listening to music, the intensity in loudness and how hard the rock is is pretty much directly proportional to how much "in the groove" I am.

That gets asked every couple of months. Nothing in particular, whatever I want at the time, it just forms a comfortable background.

It really depends, if I'm trying to do something that requires a lot of thought, or learning a new subject then I listen to the delicious sounds of silence. If I just have a massive list of bugs that need to be fixed I put on some metal or rock and get down to business. Otherwise I listen to whatever 'Random Play All' chooses, if anything.
My current favourite word is: Delicious!

I rarely listen to music when coding, but I like Military/Brass Band music when pressing on, on a long drive. Or 60s - 80s Rock.
