Note that viruses can't do any damage to hardware: they won't melt down your CPU, burn out your hard drive, cause your monitor to explode, etc. Warnings about viruses that will physically destroy your computer are usually hoaxes, not legitimate virus warnings. source[^]

Yes, very. There was once a virus which would overwrite the data in the BIOS chip of the motherboard with just random junk, next time you turned the computer on, that was it... the computer wouldnt do a thing X|

Lloyd J. Atkinson I used Vista the other day. It was also the last time I will ever voluntarily use the damn thing. I would rather use Windows 1.0 just because it dosent literally chew the RAM just to draw pretty colours.

Its my understanding that there were viruses that could (don't ask me how or if this is even true) mess around with the read/write head on HDD. You can imagine what could happen.

If you were able to update the system bios with a new flash you would be able to overclock the system and destroy components.

way back in the day, you could screw around with the sector layout of HDs with a low level format (now this is done at the factory and can't be messed with). If you tweaked things right you could improve your performance, if not...
