Vista Hibernate Mode

Does anyone else here use hibernate in Vista? When I wake my desktop machine from hibernation, it only allows me about two minutes to log in. After the two minutes, if I haven't logged in, it automatically re-hibernates. :mad: I can't find any setting in the Power Options control panel that addresses this behavior. Does anyone know how I might stop it from automatically re-hibernating?
Yep, my XP box does this as well. 5 minutes on the dot after booting from hibernate, it'll shut down again if you've not used the keyboard or mouse. I've never found a means of altering the behaviour, modifying the power profile for the welcome screen account didn't seem to do anything. It even survived a reinstall of XP. Could it be an option in the BIOS that Windows is picking up and interpreting as "shut down with extreme prejudice after X minutes of no activity"?

Why do you use Hibernate instead of Sleep? (I use hibernate because sleep doesn't always work properly: either doesn't go all the way to sleep and gets REALLY hot in the laptop bag -or- won't start back up: black screen, no output, fan on after hitting power button or raising the lid)....

Check the BIOS for a setting on sleeping after so long of inactivity. My 2002 Dell laptop running XP does this too, and I believe it's a BIOS feature/setting. Perhaps it is a holdover feature for casuing DOS to sleep or something because it'll eventually go back to sleep if I leave it at the LILO prompt too. In my case, it waits a lot longer than 2 minutes, so I rarely miss the window and don't mind it.

I haven't had this problem at all with Vista. I often hibernate it (not sure why - I mean, saving state is great, but it takes so long to boot back up!) I am running Ultimate on a laptop, but I doubt that would make a difference...

I use hibernate because I like the combination of saving the state, and turning it off. I don't like to leave the house with the computer on in any way, including in a low power state.

I had this exact problem, and I made a big rant about it here on my site[^]! To save you the bother of going there, (and so you don't think I'm posting just to make a lame plug,) I don't know why it's an issue, but do I know one way to fix it; enable the WMP media server. It uses Away Mode which prevents idle shutdown. Vista seems to have a idle shutdown that can't be disabled; I may love Vista, but I don't like this "feature".

It uses Away Mode which prevents idle shutdown. Vista seems to have a idle shutdown that can't be disabled; I may love Vista, but I don't like this "feature".

Well it does for me... but I can't be sure it will for you. As I said in the post, I did a lot of research on this, and I found no other solution. I suspect the whole thing is caused by BIOS incompatability. From what I know the BIOS is supposed to tell the computer how long the computer has been off for and how it was turned on. I suspect that my computer isn't communicating properly and without this data Vista must assume the worse and turns off after two mintues unless some user interaction happens. For what it's worth, I have a Lenovo 3000 J Series. (GigAlarm has a 30 day trial so if the WMP trick doesn't work you can try GigAlarm risk free. ;) ) EDIT: Just to clarify, GigAlarm enables Away mode after resume to prevent idle shutdown and turns it off once input it detected by the system.

Thanks, I appreciate your followup. My computer is a custom job with an MSI mainboard. I'll keep that in mind about GigAlarm. I look forward to trying your suggested solution this week!
