Holiday websites are so infuriating
-
All I want is a nice quiet location to read some books for a week, get some sun and go for some walks. All I get offered is noisy locations that are infested with drunks or kids in the middle of a coastal urban sprawl. Oh, and why do they have to be packaged with flights from an airport that is 5 hours drive away when there is a perfectly good international airport 5 miles away.

Sunshine Coast, Qld[^] (well, there's a bit of a cyclone happening, so it's less sun than normal right now) (EDT - and a massive oil spill - but it'll be cleared up in about twenty years, as the council has been asked not to use machinery in the clearing up as it may harm the environment)

Where are you for holiday?

I think there is a missing gerund in that question. Did you mean: Where are you going for holiday? I was wanting to go somewhere warm. The Algarve (southern province of Portugal) or mainland Spain, especially Catalunya (but not a city break in Barcelona). If I want a desitnation near Barcelona, most holiday websites want to fly me from Manchester to some piddly little airport about two hours drive north or south of Barcelona, when I can get a perfectly good flight from Glasgow (the city I live in) to Barcelona itself and then get on a train to my final destination. If I go to the piddly airport I have to hire a car and I'm not interested in that.

1. I actually know what a gerund is. 2. Was trying to be less grammatically correct. :-D

More people should know. It is a very important concept in modern English.

Very pretty place but boring as bat ****. Dont listen to Max, the Gold and Sunshine coasts are a cross between Vegas and Cancun during spring break. We're looking for a resort in the Pacific somewhere for a holiday with a one year old later this year. Probably Fiji or Vanuatu. he web sites are also driving me up the wall. Why oh why do they always show such tiny poor quality photos?

I can't remember how much it last cost me to go to Malawi - it wasn't RyanAir prices, but it wasn't hugely expensive either. And once there, everything is so cheap it's as close to free as you can get.

I don't mind that so much as the apparent get-lost-if-you-don't-fit-into-family-or-drunk-20-something-categories attitude. I'm a single person wanting a quiet get away.

Sahara, south of the Atlas mountains. Few people to bother you and plenty of sun. Glad I could help :D

Keep in mind I live in an area where "my babies' daddys" is common.

Ok, well I was thinking Scotland fitted all those bills. That was until you mentioned the sunshine... I understand you might want to go abroad for it but not a lot of people appreciate how much Britain itself has to offer. Pembrokeshire, for example, would fit your bill perfectly. Just find a little cottage or something near the Preselli Mountains or in the middle of the Beacons and you're set.
I doubt it. If it isn't intuitive then we need to fix it. - Chris Maunder

That is one area we do seem to lack quite a bit.

I do realise the UK has a lot to offer, but near guaranteed sunshine isn't one of them.
