Or rather a question about your ethics. Do you have a particularly strong moral stance which dictates which industries, no matter what the reward, you will and won't work in? For example, in my time I've worked in (amongst other things) tobacco and gaming - two industries which a lot of people find highly objectional - which I had no problem with morally and was ultimately very comfortable with. However, I would not want to be involved with a company that manufactures or supplies arms and armaments or a company that specialises in the production of films of dubious artistic merit. There's my, slightly morally ambiguous, line. To broaden the scope a little, are there any tasks that your current employer could set that would see you quit? Example: if you were asked to develop a secret program to spy on your user's activities (effectively spy-ware whose results would be for the sole consumption of your employer) would you be happy to do it, or would you feel compelled to find employment elsewhere?

Mr Hughes, you shock me! Ethics? Seriously, I'm a no on the arms industry as well. Dubious artistic merit I think is questionable; depending on how dubious. I can tell you anything Paris Hilton would for sure be far too across the River Dubious and out the other sie into the flood planes of skank; but I digress. The spy-ware is an interesting one. We kind of accept that our web usage and e-mails will be monitored, but the trackers that run 'inside' the box are still seen to be wrong. I think everything should be open, it's my 'born too late to be hippy' attitude. I like the idea of saying to everyone, "Okay. We've switched off all the tracking systems. Browse what you like, e-mail whoever, spend all day on the phone. We don't care! Contracted hours no longer exist, they are counter productive." Then, while everyone is cheering and opening up the beers (that are now allowed in thw workplace), you add "Just do your job." I remember a rather successful bit of software, called PGP, that relied on this - TRUST.

I would tell my employer that these programs already exist and it would far cheaper to simply purchase an existing solution. Then I would let IT deal with the moral implications of implementing it. However, your privacy should be limited while at work. You're there to work, not chat on CP all day. Crap gotta go!

He said users, not employees. Spyware on employees isn't so bad, the company is paying them to work after all (rather than watch movies). Whereas a user has actually paid the company to use the software.

Yes, but you can chose to smoke or not to smoke (and I say this as an ex-smoker). There's not a lot of choice involved in having a bomb dropped on you or being gunned down by some lunatic terrorist group.

About 5 years ago I turned down a job working on sea mines. It actually would have been pretty cool, they were using embedded linux in them and the aim was for the mine to be programmable and to lie in wait till a specific ship was identified by magnetic and sonic signatures then move itself under the ship and explode.

Don't have a problem with them. Tobacco is a user choice, they can do what they want. I wouldn't do work to prove tobacco is harmless or anything like that though. Yeah, I probably wouldn't work for weapons manufactures. I have a problem with the pharmaceutical industry. I probably wouldn't work for them unless it was in some capacity to make a difference to their negative practises. I know it's just how the markets work, but I hate that they hold patents on drugs to prevent generics manufactures making any and prevent them from getting to sick people who need them but can't afford them. You wouldn't catch me working for patent lawyers either :laugh: Or Apple ;) I mean come on, an NDA to get the iphone sdk. I'll tell them where to shove their NDA ;)

It is the government freedom machine. It brought freedom to a large part of Europe, as well as Iraq. This is not a political statement, it's just a fact. Do you think I'm being political with that statement? There was no inconsistency in his post: He said that he had sold out, he showed how he had. :( Than he said that the only thing he would not do for a living was any line of work that killed people.
