When I come to "The Code Project", for example to visit "The Lounge", there are [new] icons displayed on some of the most recent posts. I'm just wondering, out of curiosity, exactly what determines why or when a [new] icon is displayed, or not. Chris? Anyone? I'm just pondering the significance in regards to determining which posts I've read. If I click on a post and read it, then reload, it still appears as new. Any ideas as to what is going on? Is it basically just something like the last X amount of time since my last login? Or I'm not sure what else. Thanks.

I believe it's just the newest posts on the site.

I get the impression the question is more "at what point does the 'NEW' icon disappear?" I believe it is time stamped, but that may not be the case. In some other less representitive or less professional forums they are new until read. This is not the case here, thus leading me to believe my own personal theory of the Temporal Newness Hypothesis.

Isn't that how it's supposed to be?

There are several metrics that may be used. CP uses one of them, other forums may use a different one. Hmmm Time Based or Read Based? I like them both, but which is better? There is only one way to find out. FIGHT!

The mark read event normally happens 20(?) minutes after you stop browsing the forum actively, or close your browser. It can trigger inadvertently if your first attempt to load appears to time out and you try again. I think switching browsers will trigger it immediately as well.
