I already turn off my lights for 8 hours every night or so, and during the day, my lights are off too. Oh, and I've replaced all my incandescents with CF's. So, WTF. Another stupid "feel good" scheme. Marc

Well, at least they're turning off the lights on the pyramids. I'm guessing, though, that getting cows to stop farting would have a much bigger greenhouse impact.

I'm sorry - I have other things to do with my life that are more important! I love the radio shows for this that probably use more energy then anything I do. It's a feel good publicity stunt that accomplishes little. More would be done by china switches off some of it's generators.

My immediate reaction to that would be to protest by burning a stack of tires for light.

My view is this. Anytime someone thinks of doing something like this, let it be planned, and budgeted and donated to, then stop, take all that cash and build\install some solar panels and wind turbines.

Whether or not GW/CC is man-made or even exists at all, if Earth Hour makes more people think twice about leaving appliances and lights on unnecessarily then it's a good thing. Not only will reducing energy consumption mean that our resources will last longer (because apart from renewables they are finite), but it also saves money on electricity bills and means we have fewer power stations strewn across the countryside.

How many CO2 eating trees were killed to make posters and circulars advertising this crap?. Anyone who thinks politicians actually pay attention to this kind of feel-good grandstanding garbage is living in la-la-land. This is a complete waste of time and resources, and does more harm than good.

Never mind who's promoting it, saving power is a good thing generally and to be encouraged. Obviously it's not going to solve the energy problem in one day but if it raises the profile of energy conservation then I welcome it.

I'm guessing, though, that getting cows to stop farting would have a much bigger greenhouse impact.

Heck yes. In fact, getting American's off their love affair with beef would be a big step. Less cows, less rain forest destruction raising beef, etc. Marc

Don't we need the cows, sheep, goats, etc. to produce the manure necessary to grow grains, vegetables, etc. ? :-D
