Recommendations please for wireless router

It's primarily the Linksys WRT54G--despite the common name, the differences between rev 1 and rev 8 are huge--so huge, it's really deceptive to use the same model number for them. I have a rev 8 and its problems were notorious, though not as bad as some previous versions.

Some will say Dlink, some will say net gear, and some will say linksys. Others will just say stay wired :p (me being one of them). Linksys has good wireless router the wireless cards can be an issue if your location has issues with interferance. I found switching to a Dlink worked better for my location. at another location Linksys was better. Now I know that seems odd but the first location was an old appartment building ( that should have been used more for a Dorm as it was close to a college). I beleive the D-link " gamer" router (I forget the full name) was the high ground for me that did very well in a bad location. I foun d generic wireless cards better then the named brand. Linksys Tech support was top notch (I had to laugh as I was running pre release vista and they had just had their " vista trainning". I was their first vista call. Linksys runs through sysco and has decent web interface. it's going to come down to preference. I don't think I have to mention this, but people tend to forget; if curious of a signal issue, run a /ping -t and watch what you get :) think geek has some neat gadgets for signal detectors as well. (Seems I've been doing more hardware articles then programming articles. please rate this post :D )

Interesting, sounds very similar to the problem I had with my Netgear wireless router, the first router I purchased. Any time I tried to copy file larger than 2mb across the network, it would cause the router to drop all wireless connections, and I would have to go reset the router. After repeatedly contacting the company for help, and getting no where, I wrote them a nasty letter, which I never heard back from, and gave up. So I went back to the store and purchased a LinkSys WRT54G v4 wireless router, and haven't had a single problem since. I have a LinkSys Cable modem, LinkSys router and recently purchased a LinkSys switch, because I ran out of hardwired ports on the router. I'm sorry to hear you had problems, but I know from experience their support is really good, had to contact them to deal with a problem my Father was having with his set-up, and they were great help at trouble shooting the problem and getting things back to a working state, even though, as it turned out, not to be a problem with any of the LinkSys hardware. Ok, I'm going stop now, because I'm beginning to sound like a LinkSys Fanboy or something ... :rolleyes:

Everyone's a bloody comedian! :) Better advice: Don't put cups of tea near technology! (It is not the first time either!) I bet there are loads of people here who have had to purchase new keyboards because of coke/coffee etc.

I especially cannot recommend the application of jelly to keyboards, especially if allowed to pass between the keys. The best was of removing said jelly is to immerse the keyboard in ants and allow them to carry it back to the nest.

If you're in the US, I have a Netgear you can have for the cost of shipping. In fact, I have a number of routers sitting in their boxes not being used. I was intending to throw them in the garbage, but if anyone is interested, I can list what I have... Off the top of my head, I have a Xincomm, a Netopia, and the NetGear, and maybe one more.

My ex-GF bought the cheapest belkin she could find. It was a nightmare: the network randomly vanished and it lost the adsl signal on average five times an hour (it was an adsl wifi router). Coverage was also terrible - she needed about 8 meters with a couple of thin walls - well, she had to rearrange the room to get connected. In the end, she just bought a linksys and had no problems since. No network-related problems, that is. ;)

I would suggest going to http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices[^] or http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato[^] and check out what hardware they support. Either of these firmware patchs will give a cheap router features found in $600+ routers. Even if you don't need them now, using the hardware they support gives you an upgrade path for the future. They also let you adjust the wi-fi signal strengh, either turn in down to limit range or turn it up to improve a poor connection. I personally chose the tomato version because the QOS worked better for my usage. Good Luck with the next sandwich.....

My house mate has ruined two laptops with cups of tea. Yes he is an idiot and will never learn. I on the other hand have only ruined the odd keyboard one with lemonade and another was with a pint of beer. With regards to the router I have used two or three netgear routers and not had any trouble on the setup and usage. Infact the first one I bought is still going strong now (3 years on) and have no need to upgrade.
Some people are like slinky's... They're not really good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs

Not that, but because of my fist when the computer wouldn't do what I wanted. :-O In fact it was a keyboard built for adverse environments, spilling liquids wouldn't hurt it.

My longer reply is below, but I've had nothing but headaches with my Linksys router (WRT54G). The variation in quality with their offerings is huge. (When I first got the router, among other things it would crash every time there was any streaming video. Took five firmware releases to get it fixed and it still periodically slows to a crawl.)

I had a WRT54G too, and it would completely freeze up about 3-4 times a week. The only way to get it to work again was to cycle the power on it. I suffered with it for 2 months before my wife gave up on it and ordered me to buy a decent one that works. She works from home and needs a reliable internet connection to do her job, and it was really getting on her nerves. I ended up buying the D-Link DGL 4500[^]. It's expensive, but it's also the best home router I have ever had. I would never use a Linksys router again.

Ok, my first thought was, you're talking about Jim Crafton, then I read the rest of what you said ... I highly recommend LinkSys routers. I have one and it's been great. Gets excellent range, has a really good feature set, and was a snap to set-up.

I'm just after buying one of those and have had no major problems, although noticing today that i'm rarely getting a full 54 Mbps (and i'm in the room straight above). Bought a cheap Netgear one last week, but had to dump it after spening an hour or two elbow deap in the configuration, as it wouldn't work with the VPN into the office...

The one I'm using is over a year old so probably now superseded many times but is made by linksys and I've been very happy with it. It was the cheapest adsl modem router that PC World had to offer on a Sunday morning after I bricked my old d-link router through attempting a firmware upgrade after a couple of bottles of red the night before. Not got any experience of belkin apart from their kvm switches I'm afraid. Russell

We use Draytek. Can't recommend them highly enough. :)
