IOTD
-
I was thinking about how cool it would be if CodeProject had an IOTD (Image of the Day). Developers could submit pictures of a cool application that they're working on, and CodeProject would display a thumbnail sized image of the screenshot on the homepage somewhere. We could then click on the thumbnail to get a bigger picture of the screenshot and some comments from the author. The reason I had this idea is because I visit a particular site (www.flipcode.com[^] - Look at the upper right hand corner for the Image of the Day) just to see what they have for the IOTD almost everyday. Usually I'm always impressed by what I see and am rarely disappointed. The only potential problem with this is that it may give some people advertising without paying for the publicity. However, another way to look at is that some may see all of the traffic that they've gotten in just one day that their screenshot was up and then realize how much more traffic they could get if they advertised on CodeProject. So from that perspective it seems like a win-win situation.

Cool idea, let's see what happens... Jeremy Falcon Imputek "In fact it is quite simple, men and women both only want one thing - what they can't have!" - phykell

The CP homepage already has too much information to digest without adding trivial things like this. I don't see many of us making use of such a facility. It works well with flipcode because it is a gaming site and they will always have an interesting collection of images. Michael Programming is great. First they pay you to introduce bugs into software. Then they pay you to remove them again.

Perhaps I might be the only one that might be interested in seeing what other projects other developers are working on, but I doubt that and think that we would benefit by seeing what types of projects other developers are working on and coming up with. CodeProject currently consists of mainly snippets of code and components that you can plug into your own project, and large projects won't ever show up on CodeProject. With an IOTD, Chris wouldn't need the types of resources like SourceForge to connect developers with large projects, since it's only going to take up a small amount of space on the database to hold a single screenshot and a few lines of accompyning text. Also, if you're worried about cluttering up the front page, it could be placed somewhere that's non-obtrusive like maybe at the bottom of the page next to the weekly poll. Flipcode isn't necessarily just a gaming site (assuming you mean that they just do game reviews like a million other sites), but is a site about software development in the gaming industry.

Yeah, that's what I meany by gaming. (I forgot that gaming has taken on other meanings in the internet age) :-O Reno Tiko wrote: Perhaps I might be the only one that might be interested in seeing what other projects other developers are working on, but I doubt that and think that we would benefit by seeing what types of projects other developers are working on and coming up with. That's what the Collaboration / Testing forum was designed for. Not as pretty as an image but more efficient. Michael Programming is great. First they pay you to introduce bugs into software.
