The big difference is reason. If I put you in a closed room with a hungry lion, the lion would kill you and eat you and never feel remorse. However, if I put you in a closed room with a hungry lion and gave you a gun you would more than likely shoot the lion to protect yourself, but feel great regret for years to come. Evolution may say humanity evolved from animals, but we are not animals.

Thanks for your response. I get your point. How about when that lion nurses its young, or when your pet dog is extremely happy to see you? Is the difference so clear cut for you then?

Are you a mineral? I feel very certain that animals are similar creatures with less functional brains, and the method of their brain functions (emotion & logic) are probably the same as our own.

How many other people here find it too difficult to watch the nature programs that show the animals killing each other? I love nature, science, and animals, and I like a good nature documentary. But I can't stomach the more brutal aspects of survival. :(( Anybody else here feel the same way?

No, I'm not a vegetarian. I once tried to be, but I found it too difficult to find stuff to eat! I might try again in the future, though.

And thus our society cleanses itself of it's more base instincts. Only to face decay or destruction at the hands of those who haven't. Never ignore the realities of existence, for it will surely remember you.

I'm not sure what the heck you're trying to say. But it sounds as if you're saying that I'm wrong to shield myself from the "realities of existence" by not watching footage of animals killing each other. If that's what you're saying, then this is my response: I have trouble watching that stuff because I was born an extremely sensitive person, and such images often haunt me for days. As a child, I was once forced by my brother to watch footage of baby seals being clubbed to death while their mothers screamed in anguish. I'm not ignoring the "realities of existence", or denying them in any way. The truth is just the opposite. If that's not what you were saying, then never mind.

Actually I was saying you were the effect, not the cause. Probably still a bit harsh after reading it again. I do think though, that a lack of exposure to the life and death cycle of nature, causes it to be more of a shocking experience. Not that the conversion of a rabbit into rabbit stew is a particularly pleasant experience, just that it's also good eating should mollify the shocking nature.
