I bet it would stop pretty damn fast if every time a merchant radioed that he was being attacked by pirates we sent an F15 to blow their little boat out of the water, and followed up with a chopper load of Marines to clear up any pirates who got aboard the merchant. Granted it's hard for naval ships to cover a 10 thousand square miles of ocean, but an aircraft from a fast carrier can reach any point in that area in a matter of minutes. Follow that up by leveling the waterfront and sinking every potential pirate vessel at the nearest Somali port (with appropriate warning to evacuate "civilians"), and the Somali's themselves will put a quick end to the careers aof any new pirate wannabes.

The American ship is back under American control - some pirates escaped down the gang ladder, some were thrown overboard and at least one was in custody. Who need the Navy when we've got the Merchant Marine? They better go back to hijacking French ships.

We have a treaty with Nigeria promising to turn over all captured pirates. I think they ought to use a Blackhawk to deliver him - and show him the door at about 200mph and 500 feet.
