Hi every one, Its first time that I want to buy a external harddisk I thought that Western digital(500GB) is good so I have two question: 1-Does it good brand? 2-Can I use of it on the Vista 64bit or no? and whats the different between external portable and external desktop hard disk(2.5"/3.5") Thanks

1. No idea. 2. External storage should in no way be tied to any current* specific OS. * I said Current because some smart aleck will point out said device won't be compatible with MS-DOS.

Usually 2.5" ones doesn't need an AC adapter (they get electricity via USB). :)

One's got 3.5" platters, the other's got 2.5" platters ;P More seriously, 2.5" external disks consume less power, often enough less that they can be powered from a USB port rather than needing an external power brick. The speed of those disks is likely to be lower, as I'm guessing you won't get a 7200rpm drive that can be powered over a USB port. And then there's SSDs...but they are quite pricey!

The difference(in the context of your question) is that the 2.5" doesn't need an external power supply to power the HDD, it draws the power from the USB port.

Western Digital is a reputable brand. However, you should also consider Samsung drives, as they have recently been receiving good reviews.

I've heard stories about external harddrives becoming unusable after being hooked up to Vista machines, they would remain usable only with Vista (so basically, they'd be useless) Sadly I've never been able to prove or disprove those stories..

The most recent generation of seagates are crippled by buggy firmware problems. The patch released a few months ago didn't fix the issue. I wouldn't put anything you care about on one until they fix the problem.

I've got a Western Digital 1 TB drive running now, and haven't had any problems so far. I know everyone has a favorite brand, and some have had bad luck with WD, but I've been using nothing else since the Caviar series was introduced many years ago and have only experienced one failure. That unit was promptly replaced without any hassle, so I give them good marks for customer service as well as reliability. I've had to deal with Seagate, IBM, and Maxtor drives when I was repairing PCs for a living, and all have been shown by that experience to be less reliable than WD. In my history, Maxtors have been the worst, Seagate a close second, and IBM fairly decent though it's a very small sample group. Others will tell you different, of course, based on their personal experiences. My guess is that the major brands are probably comparable in quality, and if you stick with a brand that has been in the business for a long, long time you'll likely be doing the right thing.

Haven't had any problems with the dozen or so externals I've had hooked to Vista at any point in time. Two (one 2.5" and on 3.5") went from my Vista machines to my Playstation 3 with no problems. :) Flynn
