Oracle has bought Sun[^]. Probably not so many of us here using Java but this has implications for those of us using MySQL. Seems a better fit than IBM buying Sun though.

    cheers, Paul M. Watson.

Now this is big news. I don't really use Java, but I do use MySQL for hosting my forum :D

This seems like a strange move to me actually, could someone please explain how it makes sense?

Sun cashing out before it really starts to depreciate.

Yes it is a lot better fit. Considering that Oracle Fusion is based on Java and Oracle uses Java at many places.

Well in fairness IBM uses a lot of Java too. I think it is more important to Oracle that it now owns MySQL, one of its biggest competitors. God knows what they are going to do to MySQL now though.

Isn't MySQL open source? I think they'll just have to let it go free. [like that'll happen!!]

It will be free and completely stripped down, probably rebadged as Oracle 'Lite', then maybe they'll over more versions of Oracle increasing price and features.

That would make sense only if they replaced the existing (jokes of) MySQL db engines with Oracle's one.

now that Oracle 10g express and M$SQL Express are free, why'd you need MySQL? MySQL ... function and triggers cannot be recursive temp table cannot be referenced more than once in same query open more than one conn per transaction is not permitted (distrib trans..) ... I thought MySQL is nice in beginning but now thinks its fading away
