The "green" lie

The last company I worked at tried very hard to pose as a “Green” company. To do this, they had a bunch of solar panels on the roof that powered some refrigerators and used recycled water for the landscaping. At the same time, they had a “cradle to grave” policy for all computers, which meant that all computers needed to be tracked from purchase to destruction. No computers were ever donated, and I watched them send brand new computers, in the box, straight into the landfill. In addition, they were a biotech company, and the amount of waste that is generated by biotech is astounding! When a company claims it’s “green”, it usually doesn’t mean much.

Even solar panels is not that green. It actually takes more energy to create the panel, then what will be gathered through the sun before it starts to get worn and old.

When any organization, commercial ones more particularly, start to claim to be *whatever the in thing is*, I get suspicious. To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson about a guest "The louder he talked of his honor, the faster we counted our spoons."

Depending on your country, take a look at the corporate tax form (1120 in the US) or even the personal. Being "green" gets you big $$$ in tax credits and deductions. If you multiply the factor of tax cheating/lying by the factor of bull-shirt of the greenies, you will get a result that can fill a landfill and then some which stinks worse than babies' diapers. Your anecdote is just another reason why government ALWAYS fails to deliver the ACTUAL goods. Contrast it with Craigslist.org (free market revolution) which allows people to be greedy and buy cheap and sell their crap for $, or give a way for free. I take pride in knowing some guy has what I was thinking of tossing in the dumpster.

that simply is not true and solar technology is getting more sophisticated and miniturised all the time. A new product will the released shortly which has solar capability in thread size - therefore solar energy captuer can be incorporated into standard materials such as roof tiles, walls etc.

Not true. The energy yield ratio varies between 4 in Northern Europe and 7 in somewhere sunny like Australia. In comparison, wind turbines have a ratio of around 80 - bigger is better. Source: Sustainable Energy without the hot air by David JC MacKay[^]

I very much regret that I cannot help you there. In one of those serendipitous moments I became aware of the quote a couple of days ago when it was used on a UK TV Discussion Show, slightly misquoted and wrongly attributed, although I was not aware of that at the time. When I saw the OP, it reminded me of the quote, so, to be sure to give the correct attribution etc. I googled for 'counting the spoons'. Long story short it led me to this site[^] where a search gave me the correct wording and attribution (in the TV Show it was attributed to Lord Chesterfield).
