They don't let me play with those as a rule, but I'm thinking about buying my own to use on roadtrips. :-D I did once get to operate a 230kV breaker, but that was for training. I have the 30kV gloves, in case I need to reach inside a live switch or sectionalizing cabinet, which I've done often. But mostly I spend my time designing stuff and managing the construction. In a pinch I can do anything the line guys do, except for the heavy lifting bits - they average about 300 lbs and have the strength of gorillas. I try hard at the gym, but there's no way I'm ever going to acquire strength like theirs. I don't have the training to build lines - that's a very specialized knowledge, and our people are very good at it - but I can design them, and I can operate the devices that control them.

Damn! I'm envious. I could really use that kind of space but it won't fit on my lot and I definitely can't afford it. Beautiful job, BTW. I've built a few from Sears in my time, and I know the instructions aren't all they should be.

No, the instructions themselves were kind of alright, but yes, the reality of putting it together didn't quite fit what they said to do... Particularly the gables!! What an unmitigated disaster that was for quite some time! Still, it's up now, and turned out alright!! Luckily my brother (a plumber) and one of his friends (a builder) were on hand!! Me, I lifted heavy objects and held the dumb end of the tape measure!! It's been quite expensive to build, and even though I've been fortunate to get mate's rates for a fair bit of stuff (concrete, fill, earthmoving equipment etc), it's still well up over $10K. Got my sparky coming in the next week or two to cable it up - three-phase into the shed (one outlet), a bunch of lights and some heavy duty 20 amp "standard" power points.

When you get your "sparky" in house, try to emphasize that you don't want a grounded delta configuration for your lighting circuits - they're a PITA.

I still love programming, and learning cutting edge technology. If it was for new technologies appearing I'd of started my own business by now. But as my job pays extremely well and I have good working hours ( < 40 ) I don't think I'll be swapping careers just yet.

:laugh: Never mind; it would take all day to explain it, and it really isn't that big a deal. We have one site that uses this configuration and it's constantly having trouble, but that may just be the user's unique situation. For the most part, I prefer to deal with what's called a grounded wye connection; it's inherently safer. But I'm sure whatever is standard practice in your area will work fine. What are you putting in the building that takes 3-phase?

Close. But I expect we'll have a lineman do the job. There is some element of risk even in routine switching, and they have the specialized protective gear for it. But I'll definitely be watching!

Nothing specifically that takes 3-phase, but since it's available, I might as well run it to an outlet... never know when I might need to use a big-ass welder!!
