Here in Australia we don't tend to use those terms... For Secondary schooling we have grades 8 to 12. Grade 10 can be referred to as Junior, and Grade 12 Senior. For university, we have first year, second year, third year etc etc... Why not put your entries into a user definable lookup table so that users can set the values that they wish to use?

Yet in NSW it's 7-12 as we grow up faster down here. My poor nephew finished primary school in NSW then moves to QLD and had to do another year before moving to high school
Sucks to be him!! I think it's because NSW call grade 1 what we call Prep (which is before grade 1).

Hello. I'm working on a project where I need to label a student by the year of school they're current in. In united states high schools (secondary school) and colleges (universities), there are one of four names associated with the year you're currently in: year 1 = Freshman year 2 = Sophmore year 3 = Junior year 4 = Senior Are these the same names used for the different years in secondary school & university in countries outside of the united states? Thanks -Goalie35
Romania: Primary: grades 1-4 Secondary: grades 4-8 High-school: grades 8-12 College or university: grades 12 and above (usually 3 years, but used to be 4 years for normal students and 5 years for doctors) That's why we're smarter than the rest of the world. :D

UK don't use these. For me it was: Reception (year 0, yes our school years are zero-indexed!) - Year 6 = Primary School Year 7-11 = Secondary school Year 12-13 = College/Sixth form Universities are just 1st, 2nd, 3rd year etc.

In Germany: Grundschule (Grades 1 to 4) then, depending on the teachers suggestions: Hauptschule (up to grade 9) Realschule (up to grade 10) Gymnasium (up to grade 12/13) or Gesamtschule, which integrates students of all 3 groups. Commonly, grades 5 to 7 are referred to as "Unterstufe", grades 8 to 10 are referred to as "Mittelstufe" and grades 11 to 13 are referred to as "Oberstufe". Also, "Unterstufe" and "Mittelstufe" are referred to as "Sekundarstufe I", the "Oberstufe" is referred to as "Sekundarstufe II".

I had year 1-3 for primary forms 2/3/4 for middle (they got form 1 added the following year) (clases lettered ie 2a,2b and 2c) year 3/4/5 for grammar (clases 30,31,32 etc) lower 6th upper 6th the year 1-3 for uni perfectly logical

UK: Primary school: years 1-6 Secondary school: years 7-11 Sixth form: years 12 & 13 Before primary school, there's playgroup and nursery (kindergarten), but these are optional. Sixth form is currently optional, but it will soon be mandatory to serve at least one year. University I don't know about

Not in Canada, at least not in high school, we just go by the grade. Different provinces, even different regions have different cut offs between elementary school, middle school and high school so it's easiest just to say "She's in grade 11" or whatever. I always wondered what those terms meant watching US tv shows and movies but never cared enough to look it up.

Mine was First - typically 11-12 years old Second - 12-13 Third - 13-14 Fourth - 14-15 Fifth - 15-16 (this is where/when we did our O.W.L.S.) Lower Sixth - 16-17 Upper Sixth - 17-18 (this is where/when we did our N.E.W.T.S.) Now I've emigrated, I get totally confused when someone is described as being in the 5th year. I have to add 6 and subtract 10 to convert to real money.
