Licensing madness
-
I've been checking prices on a few components lately. I was surprised by the sheer number of licensing options some of them had. Separate prices for 1 license, 2-5, 6-10, 11+. Perhaps a server license. How many cores on that server? You'll need a different license for that. Then after all that mess, some companies would let me pay for a year of *Gold* level support on top of everything else. Thinking back on it the only licenses I've ever bought were either for 1 seat or for 1 site. Those options at least appeal to my caveman counting skills. Kronk have 1 or many. Does the extra granularity actually appeal anybody? Or, do they just serve to make Kronk angry?

it does... unfortunately, many of our customers demand it. If you think its a pain for you to purchase, think about what a pain it is for us to manage all the variants.

Offer a trial license for free, and a "full" license for (say) $1000; and if someone insists on a "custom" license, charge $2000. :-D

A company I used to work for had some meetings with Microsoft over licensing. They got fed up with MS's licensing options and said that to make it easier they would just give everyone in the company an MSDN Premium Subscription. MS objected that they'd be wasting money and there were cheaper options. It was pointed out to MS that they'd already wasted several people's time so any cost saving in ironing out the licensing costs was almost all gone anyway, so MS agreed to giving everyone an MSDN license as they got their money and we got on with what we needed.

That's one way to go. I've been in a few meetings where several of us argue for hours over weather we should buy a $300 component... Uh guys, had we bought this I could have had the solution implemented by now. Instead we've burned a few hours and still don't have anything working... You guys carry on, I'm going to go sit in the corner and eat flour.

It might. I was thinking of an old Simpson's gag. (homer is depressed and eating flour from a bag) Marge : "Homey, wouldn't you rather have your sugar bag?" Homer : "I don't deserve my sugar bag"(shovels a handful of flour into his mouth)
:-D
Yusuf Can I help you?

Licensing schemes are Marketing scams. You spend "X" to develop a product; you expect to sell "Y" users a copy to use over the planned lifetime of the product. Divide "X" by "Y" then add a reasonable margin to keep your stockholders happy and pay your employees. Simple. Anything else is just a ploy to suck profit out of suckers.
