Since it sounds like at least some of the CPains are well traveled, I thought I'd take a stab in the dark and come ask here. What is the most naturally beautiful place in the world? I'm hoping to get some answers based on personal experience and not Google. In my personal opinion, Mauritius, Norway and Singapore are the most beautiful places I've visited. However I'm really looking for naturally beautiful, which kind of excludes Singapore which is an amazingly beautiful CITY. I want to plan a once in a life time trip, but I'm still not sure where I want to go... Thanks!

Thailand. It has something for everyone. Make sure you go 'oop north, to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai - and take the long route - some of the scenery on the way is amazing.

I can't speak to the most beautiful spot in the world, but I've seen some pretty nice places. :) I personally have a soft spot for the islands in the Caribbean. If you want pristine views, you might also check out the national parks in the western US or Alaska - many of the parks are absolutely immense and have virtually no development as far as the eye can see.

I may be slightly biased ;) but I think British Columbia is by far the most varied, scienic place on the planet. I haven't taken the Rocky Mountaineer [^]train, but it comes through the city I live in and I've heard nothing but good things (also noted by National Geographic as "One of the world's greatest trips". Cheers, Drew.

Uh huh. The first time I went, I got a clue from the first traffic light. Normal green - check. Normal amber - check. Really huge, massive, you-can't-miss-or-ignore-me red - check. I stopped when it was red. Big mistake, nobody stops at a red light. For some reason they all seem to drive assuming that everyone else will give way in defference to their sublime driving skill. It's like the entire country is joy-riding. And don't mention parking...

I'll second Drew's suggestion of British Columbia :-) From the Rockies (e.g. Lake Louise[^]), through Vancouver (OK, it is a city) to Vancouver Island. I spent three weeks touring BC in 1997 and I still remember it so vividly (more vividly than my photos came out, though, unfortunately :-(). Another naturally beautiful place is Yosemite[^].

Java, Basic, who cares - it's all a bunch of tree-hugging hippy cr*p

I think that is the key for where to look. I spent some time backpacking in the mountains of NM and I was in awe when I looked up at the night sky and saw other arms of the Milky Way. Not something you are used to growing up in the big city, it makes you feel incredibly small and insignificant.

Egypt - anywhere in the desert at sun-rise. Seychelles - perfect white sand / blue sea combo that goes very well with beer. Grand Canyon - that is one feck of a crack, beats JSOP's Seamstresses. Tihany peninsular - beautiful part of beautiful Lake Balaton. For non-natuaral try Time Square 2a.m. in heavy rain - note the weather and time, it just works so well with the drunks, homeless and druggies. Any wine cellar anywhere when the owners cant see me.

Thanks!

I can't claim to be as well-travelled as some of my fellow CPians, but since I moved to Switzerland I've seen some stunning mountain scenery. The Jungfrau region http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungfrau[^] has to take the biscuit. The view from the top is breathtaking, and you don't even have to be a mountaineer to see Europe from 3500 metres!! Also good for comedy value as you watch the hundreds of Jap tourists fall asleep on the way up due to oxygen deprivation (you get approx 30% less oxygen than at sea level, at that height). Truly a stunning place, and the surrounding countryside is great for hikes and such as well.
