Police Giving Hugs and Helments[^] to cyclist without helmets. If this is genuine it is about one of the neatest things I've seen.

Acceping helmets from police, I can live with it... but I will never, ever, hug a police officer on duty, that's just creppy. What happens if you refuse ? do they charge you with obstruction of justice ?

When these things happen in Europe, they usually involve topless girls. So, I say this is a hoax.

I notice they let women pass right on by and only stopped and hugged the guys. I don't think I want a helmet from the Danish police......

If this isn't genuine, it's too bad. I think the hug is actually a good piece of psychology, as it helps remind the recipient who they are keeping themselves safe for: their family. Cycling without a helmet, regardless of the conditions, is just plain stupid. Two years ago I did an endo over my handlebars and landed in a ditch. I was knocked out for a few seconds. Without my helmet I would have probably ended up with a skull fracture instead of a mild concussion.

My neighbour used to let his kids ride without helmets; "Well, we never had helmets when we were kids." he said "and it didn't do me any harm!" I pointed out that, if it had, he maybe wouldn't be standing here having this conversation while his kids hurtled down the hill, as he'd be damaged, disabled or dead. It took a while to sink in. They wear helmets now.

Wish I was a cyclist in Denmark. I want one of those helmets really bad. Those are great helmets.

For some reason, this reminds me of the song at the end of Portal: ... But there's no sense crying over every mistake You just keep on trying till you run out of cake And the science gets done and you make a neat gun For the people who are still alive. ... Maybe the coppers were giving out hugs because they were grateful the bicyclists were still alive.

Before helmets became law here, I flipped over my handlebars when stopping using the front brake. I put out my left hand to stop myself, and broke my collarbone and a knuckle. Then the bike landed on me. Then I noticed the traffic had stopped. When I got up I felt no pain dragging the bike to the curb, until I got in the police car (handily at the intersection when I flipped). I don't go biking without a helmet now.
