For the past 16 months I have been working as a QA in a product development. Primary tasks included manual testing, automated testing using ruby, adding features to the testing framework, upgrade testing, deploying servers etc. I have decided to move to dev. The question for me now is: what kind of dev? I was thinking of web development. - nuoi

I cant know that since I have never ever done it. I have to make a choice. My question is: Which One? A year back I chose to become a QA and now I feel I should move on to dev. Allow me to rephrase. Can anyone suggest me a good domain to develop my expertise in? nuoi

For the past years, I've been trying to build relationships, work them out when they don't work, sometimes wondering if the emotional investments are worth the returns. I have decided to move to womanizer. The question for me now is: what kind of womanizer? I was thinking of a real dumb, brute one.

Or, to put it differently: Why do you think you are fit for web development, or development in general?

Don't attribute to stupidity what can be equally well explained by buerocracy.

No, they are over rated. Rather go for the gentle approach, let them start to like you and then bammm, they will never see it coming, otherwise your just going to be another brute

Personally I would go for the Womanizer specialising in Relationships of the Wealthy Older Woman. They are grateful and likely to spend a lot of money on you.

Your only going to find out what you prefer after you get your hands dirty, I'd say you have to look at what would be the best/easiest for you to get into the market and start getting experience. I started on windows apps and from there moved over to web, personally windows development was easier for me but I prefer web mainly because it's more challenging and there is so much that you can do.

I chose to be in QA coz I didn't know what I was fit for. Now after knowing that I don't want to do QA and the fact that I love development I want to move to dev. I want to specialize in some domain but I am puzzled since I don't know which one to choose. I don't want to experiment anymore. Do you have a opinion? -Harshad

There are only two types of developers Those that are employed. Those that are unemployed. Those that hang about on CP. You are asking the last category for advice?

Depends on where your skills really are. There are very few developers who do it as "just another job" and are successful. If you have collected some experience in Web Dev already, it's a good start.

That's actually a bad sign. Most kind of development requires learning new stuff frequently. Without curiosity, without enjoying something new, that is a total pain. There is one role that would spare you from experimenting: maintenance programming - mostly "keeping existing systems alive". But that's usually just a different kind of frustration, working on a code base you'll never understand, you can never really improve, just to save a bank the cost of switchign to new servers. But if you enjoy reading other peoples crappy code, and have some abstruse specialization - like COBOL - this might be for you.
