So I posted on CP last week about my Vista machine blue screening. It came down to a memory error. Someone suggested blowing the dust out of the RAM slots and swapping the 2 sticks. Good news: it seemed to work! I've been running for 2 days now without any blue screens, and the memory error detection tool in Vista can't find any errors. Wahooo! But it got me thinking: I'm running x64 with 4GB of RAM (2 sticks of 2GB each). I've got 6 slots for RAM, so I could theoretically load it up with 12 GB if I bought the cheap 2GB sticks. Is 12 gigs of RAM overkill? How much RAM do you guys have for your dev machines at home?

I'm on 3 GB which is way more than I need currently and I'm not ready for the move to 64-bit yet. When I eventually move to 64-bit I'll probably double it up to 6 GB to deal with the latest wave of memory-wasteful programs.

I don't develop on Vista. The Vista laptop I do use, however, has 2GB. It's slow starting and doing other tasks. If I used it more, I would consider bumping it up to 3GB.

My work PC - 2 GB - crying out for more but pain trying to get any hardware upgrades approved My home PC - 3 GB - way more than I currently use My home server - 2 GB My media center - 1 GB (could do with more but only to cope with memory leaks in MCE without frequent restarts) My spare PC - 1 GB My dads desktop (one of my old ones) - 1 GB My dads laptop (the main one he uses)   - 256 MB (enough really for what he runs - XP Pro and Office 2003)

That raises an interesting question I've been thinking about for a while. Given the amount of RAM that a lot of people have, what would happen if you just set the Swap file size to 0? Does Windows run faster? Will it even let you do this?

What are you using it for? For general development I'd say yes. If you're planning on writing the next generation 2D/3D graphics app then maybe not. I've got 6GB on Vista 64, and this past weekend got to see a program use up to 5.4 Gb of RAM while rendering a sequence (only about 1800 frames - about 60 seconds)! First time I'd ever personally seen that.

4GB, for XP x64. I bought it over a year ago, I thought I'd have to upgrade by this time.. but I don't. 4GB is still enormous overkill. I almost never need more than 2GB. But Vista is different, even with 12GB it probably still wastes it all. I've heard weven is better in this regard.

Do you feel and improvement from 4gb to 6gb?

That's kind of a personal question. :~ My two AlphaServers say: Main Memory (256.00MB) Main Memory (128.00Mb) Well, OK, when I upgraded my Wintel system last January to a Core 2 Quad I bought 4GB of RAM intending to go to 64-bit XP, but so far I'm still using 32-bit XP which reports 3GB. And it's running just fine.

Can Vista even use that much? See here.

I don't develop on Vista. The Vista laptop I do use, however, has 2GB. It's slow starting and doing other tasks. If I used it more, I would consider bumping it up to 3GB.

Huh? Maybe I'm a bad reader, but I see nothing in that article about maximum amount of memory. I would assume, and I'm pretty certain it's true, that x64 Vista can easily handle 12 GB. I just did some searching around the net and it seems x64 Vista supports up to 128 GB of RAM!

Of course not :) Just imagine how snappy everything will be when Windows does not need to ever go to the swap file!

Heh. Interesting, I hadn't thought of that. Since I've already got 4GBs, it will take about $150 to bring me up to 12 GB. That's not too bad! I think I may just do this. Thanks leppie. By the way, why are you running 32-bit OS still?

What are you using it for? For general development I'd say yes. If you're planning on writing the next generation 2D/3D graphics app then maybe not. I've got 6GB on Vista 64, and this past weekend got to see a program use up to 5.4 Gb of RAM while rendering a sequence (only about 1800 frames - about 60 seconds)! First time I'd ever personally seen that.
