Journey of Mankind

Anyone watch this last night? If not and you're in the UK catch on iPlayer. Very interesting. Journey of Mankind[^] "Astonishing genetic evidence reveals that everyone alive today who is not African descends from just one successful, tiny group [according to the programme, just a few hundred people] which left the continent in a single crossing, an event that may have happened around 70 thousand years ago." Related to the documentary - interactive version. It will take you about 10 minutes. Peopling of the World[^]

Only saw the last few minutes of it but it looked good. Luckily I had left the recorder going by mistake after the previous program (South Pacific? - documentary, not "There ain't nothing like a Daaaaaaaame, nothing in the world......etc etc) so I can watch the whole thing. My daughter is hopefully going to Kenya in Summer 2010 for a month witha school expedition so it might be interesting for her too.

We had to settle for a visit to Hartlepool nuclear power station :(( The only exciting bit was when we saw a very large open oil drum type container filled the the brim with a fluorescent green liquid. It was like something off the Simpsons. We got shouted at to get away from it, and they wouldn't answer questions about what it was. Looking back, it was probably just Swarfega, but it seemed exciting at the time.
Words fade as the meanings change, but somehow, it don't bother me.

That's still more excitement than I had in my nuke plant tour in grade school. All we got was an extremely stern lecture about what would happen if we touched anything during out walk-through of the control room.
