"Too Good" at my current Role

Here I am in my job of 6 years, just been overlooked after applying for promotion because I am "Too good" at my current role (Managements words not mine). Has anyone ever had this in their job? Its frustrating for me as I have been here for 6yrs now and was assured the potential of career progression when I joined, I have about 10yrs experience in the field of Software Development, including Project Management And Team Leading and I feel now is the time to set myself a fresh challenge in a more managerial position. I am starting to wonder if its the company as people around me in other departments are getting management roles and then a few months later getting kicked out of those roles because they are useless.. The buzz word going round here is you are "moved into management if you are useless at your current job" The question is in these recession times do I stay? or do I go?

Then walk. If a company is incapable of understanding that your life isn't devoted to them and that you need to grow then the long term result will be that everyone will be unhappy.

Remind your current employers that if you are "Too good" at your current role, then maybe another employer would be interested in your being too good for them instead. Suggest that perhaps they would like for you to stay with them and become too good at management. That said, in the current environment I'm not sure I would switch jobs so carelessly. Consider that you have to go through a probationary period, and if the new company decide to make redundancies, you'll be at the top of the list of a 'last in first out' policy. Make the decision first. If you are ready to move on from your current job, make sure your current company know why they could potentially lose you.

I left. 10 years at a company in the same role (same title, same basic pay rate but greatly expanded responsibilities just to differentiate myself and stay 'alive'). They would not see my request to move up, so I moved out. That and the company was bought in in the last 2 years seemed like it was being run by myopic monkeys on acid.

Make it clear that you are looking for the advancement that you were assured would be there, not for financial reasons (even if that is part of it), but for your personal well being as you feel you need the fresh challenges that advancement would naturally bring. That's basically telling them that you'll look elsewhere if they don't keep the deal - without even mentioning it, and stops them just offering you more $ to stay in your current role.

Well, I'm wondering if they are paying you for being "Too Good"? Titles are cheap, you can call yourself just about everything under the sun, it's just a term, but are they paying you for what YOU feel you're worth? Next, do you want the responsibilities that come with that position, and truly want to move away from programming, or do you want to continue to do what it is you're now doing, but with "Management" wrapped around it? If it's just the money, go out and have a name tag for your desk made up that say "Lead Programmer" or "Super Senior Software Engineer/Supervisor" and go about your business (eventually they'll actually start calling you that). If it's the responsibilities of management you're after, look elsewhere. Good Luck.

Yup, that's happened to me, years ago. I walked and never looked back. The next employer hired me for about the same pay, but at the level of responsibility I should have received at the previous one. A company that won't let capable people grow will lose them, and in short order become extinct.

Along the same lines as the other posts; they need to talk or you walk. Decide what you want and then tell your line manager. If no response go to his boss. Also try money or job - the new role or 2x salary.

I think it is time to walk out. Don't rush it, take your time and look for better position somewhere else. I was in the same situation 3 years back. After long and hard thought I decided to look for another position. I had the leisure of looking for job and after finding what I thought I dream job, I left them behind.

I want a fresh challenge, I want the responsibilities that come with a management role, the thrill of building moulding and working with a team to achieve a goal. These days I feel i am reduced to being a code monkey sitting here typing code all day with the odd project to manage when there is one. I dont care what the job title is (it could be Chief Tea Architect) as long as it gives me the challenge and goals i need to fufill my ambitions.

As just a counterpoint, this is also a method companies use to get people to quit. Another method is to "promote" them to a truly useless, powerless position. Regardless, I wouldn't walk--I'd just start looking for other jobs. Gotta keep that paycheck.
