He's probably been used to that old fashioned tried and trusted method of reading maps. It all falls down if you are given wrong directions by a local of course.

I drive a lot and make use of SatNav. About a month ago, I was going to unfamiliar place. Oh shit, my car power source (cig liter) got loose and I lost power (Since I insert, remove, and twist the power connector, I guess it got loose over years of use). I had no time to fix it and decided to fall back to Google Maps. Print direction and off I went. Little did I notice that I typed wrong address and ended up being about 2 miles off. I'd no choice but to call for help :-O

        Yusuf May I help you?

I have just given someone directions, and said "Come off at Junction 11 and head east." "Right ho" came the reply, and we ended the call. One of the Elves popped her head up and said "You mean go West, he's coming down from the north, not up from London!" Imagine the stunned silence.

Makes perfect sense... If you look at a normal map, oriented so it can be read easily, east is to the right, and west is to the left. Therefore, in the context of navigation, east = right and west = left, so "go east" becomes "turn right" and "go west" becomes "turn left". Yes, I know that coming south the "map is upside down", as it were. But that's not how girls think when navigating...

She's right. Everybody knows that people from up north have to swim oceans and cross continents to complete a section that could have been completed in 3 miles by turning left instead of right.

 how do you think he got from another planet and ended up so close to his destination then? intergalactic maps aren't that detailed you know.

There is a woman in the UK who's afraid of taking right turns. When she has to go somewhere she spends about an hour plotting the trip so that she can get there with all left turns. On average that adds about 45min to the travel time. (seen it on tv couple days ago)

It's taken me over 3 minutes to understand that east is east, clearly redundancy kills brain cells. Can't stop to think about it though, episodes of 'The Professionals' don't watch themselves.
