So last night I saw Star Trek at the IMAX. Film - Good - Can't really say much that others haven't already said. IMAX - Disappointing. Firstly because it is no where near as huge as I had been lead to believe by my friend. It's only about 50% bigger than a regular screen. Secondly, as the screen is larger, you just sit further away to achieve the same level of filled vision. If there is any increase in definition or resolution it isn't noticeable (perhaps because of the increased distance from the screen).

My only experience with IMAX was watching a documentary about Niagra Falls. The camera panned over the river and then continued over the falls... very impressive, especially on an IMAX screen. Tim

Cool! I didn't know it was in Imax format too. The IMax theater in Syracuse NY is projected on the most of the dome'd ceiling and you nearly recline to watch the movie. I thought they were all like that. The screen fills your vision in nearly every seat. The projector however cannot handle the larger reels of a full length feature film (I am told it is a weight issue), so sadly Star Trek will not be playing there.

I saw the last Batman film on iMax in Manchester - was impressed by the obviously iMax'd bits (usually the dizzying 'top-of-a-skyscraper' sequences) but I'm not sure that it is *that* much better. I guess its like the step up to HD - obviously better, but not life-changing!

In Manchester (England) its a floor to ceiling affair - more like watching a very wide and high cinema screen.

Is it a "real" IMAX or a fake retrofitted IMAX setup ? Fake or not IMAX ?[^]

I would assume it's a real one. It's the only screen at the venue, and afaik is < 10 years old.

I think that is the problem - it don't think it is. I think they just showed a regular format film and upscaled it to fit the IMAX screen. IMAX screens are square (ish), so yeah, the screen itself was very tall compared with a normal widescreen style cinema, but the actual film only filled around 60% of the vertical height of the screen in a letterbox style view.

They're doing it wrong, then - the IMAXs I've seen have filled pretty much my entire field of vision, making the experience absolutely incredible. The first one I saw[^] was in the Canadian pavilion at the Seville Expo in 1992[^]. That was awesome.

The IMAX I have been at in Columbus Ohio was great. The size of the screen was up there but the seating was so close that it filled your entire field of vision. The showed a 3D space film (use, had those headsets on with LCD filtering) and when they showed the stars it seemed like you were out in space. Cool feeling! Now, that said, your experience depends on the film also. There are articles that say it was "digital re-mastered" for IMAX and I wonder if that has the quality of IMAX film. I know a good IMAX film in a decent IMAX theater can really be as big as difference as a quality HDTV over old TV signal with rabbit ears :)
