Good. What happens when your layabout ass hits someone and damages their property? Do you have 10K in the bank to pay?

I disagree heavily with forced insurance. Talk about TAXES! I've paid enough insurance over the last 24 years to buy a new car and never filed a single claim.

4 km per hour is within the margin of error. It's ridiculous. It's also roughly half of 5 mph. That means they nailed me for 2 mph over the limit. Also 45 euros is about 60 USD, so double that and I got penalized in a manner consistent with your ticket. I'm not whining, I'm pissed off. There is a difference. And it's not the only idiotic thing France has done to me. There's list of stupidity about 20 pages long. This was the last straw.

I'm not saying you don't have reason to hate France. :) Just that considering my last ticket and your post it sounded like whining. ;) Not that there's anything wrong with that of course.

Nor, if he damages himself, does he have the 20K he'll owe the hospital. But not to worry, you and I will pay. Obama is on his side.

Ok, how about you keep enough cash in the bank to pay for any damages you may do to somebody's property or health? Having insurance when you drive is sensible and responsible.

You don't have to drive you know. And since you've mentioned the "commons" to me in the past wouldn't you be endangering the commons by driving without insurance?

Do you realize that when you drive without insurance you are risking not only your transportation but other people's as well? Regardless of how good of a driver you are accidents do happen, I went well over a decade before having my first. Assuming an accident does happen in which you are at fault, how will you compensate the other party for the damage you did? Will you even try? Will you be just another scab and force them to sue you and never collect a dime even though you did damage their property?

Lets put it this way, I was paying about 500 something every six months for basic insurance. I'm not giving insurance companies my hard earned money. If I owe someone for damages, they will get paid with the money I saved not paying for insurance. I paid thousands already, thousands I could have stashed away in a CD or something.

It depends if you are talking insurance for property damage or insurance against injuring someone... Over here, your car registration includes a (quite hefty) portion that pays for your CTP insurance - compulsory third party insurance that covers you against injuring or killing another person. It doesn't cover you for property damage. If you don't have CTP (and the only way that can happen here is if your vehicle is unregistered) there are hefty fines. HOWEVER - you do not have to have normal insurance (to cover damage to property), and I personally know people who "self insure", ie: they don't pay an insurance company and are happy to cover damages privately. I did this when I had a motorbike worth $2000 that was going to cost me $900/year to insure.

In surveys, around 85% of drivers state that they are above average or better.

What kind of road were you on? If in a built-up area with a school with a very low speed limit, then this 4km/h could be important. If not, the authorities are being somewhat pedantic. You mentioned "margin of error", that is a very credible defense. Reason, vehicle odometers are legally permitted (in Britain) a tolerance of +- 10% accuracy, unless you knew you were exceeding whatever the speed limit was, in which case, you are probably on to a losing wicket. However, long time no speak. How are things in general ?

Autoroute with limit in excess of 90 km/hr. It's pedantic and as a result, ridiculous. Aside from this last stupidity, things are fine. What I hadn't mentioned was that I just bought a new car and came home from the dealership only to get this ticket in the mail...

I've already paid 20,000 on the assumption that I will cause damage. Really this is wealth redistribution. I'm forced to pay because someone else caused damage they weren't able to cover. Its forced. Just glad to see that you agree with forced payments for something you don't use. Kinda like Medicare and Social Security. Good to see that you support FICA.

I think an escrow account is more appropriate. I've paid about 20,000 so far in insurance and never needed to file a claim nor answer to one. So, I've already paid. I should be able to use what I've paid to cover any future damages, with a refund to use in retirement if I decide to stop driving.

To somebody you've damaged? I was very clear that in the absence of insurance why not have cash on had to cure damage done in the event of an accident. So, why not? Do you think it is unreasonable to be prepared for accidents and things you cant predict?

Nothing about driving is forced it is a lifestyle choice that has consequences. I know lots of people who live without a car and make great money. They understand that they made a choice why don't you?
