That defense is no good, IMO one should always create multiple partitions and keep certain things apart. The better defense is how should one know mmc.exe got improved from system observation to system management tool, it wasn't mentioned on the Vista starter's guide was it? :)

ntfsresize[^] seems to work pretty well. Part of ntfsprogs[^], available on a seemingly-endless variety of Linux-based live/rescue CDs...
That would be my first choice.

I've used Paragon Partition Manager before when Partition Magic didn't work.

That was my strategy for years, but each new version of Windows makes it more and more difficult to properly separate user things from OS things, and most installed programs are worse yet. A decade ago, i held out some hope of a system where i could re-install the OS without having to re-install most of my non-OS software afterwards... but this has become near-impossible. I've gone with the path of least resistance at last... May God have mercy on my soul.

I discovered it only a year back. I haven't used it, but it doesn't get the prominence it should.

One of the best pieces of software I've come across is "BootIt" from www.terabyteunlimited.com An excellent utility that I've been using for years. It runs independently of any OS and can create, delete, slide, expand, contract partitions and format them into any of zillions of OS types. It also has excellent capabilities to determine just what drives and partitions are visible to your OS, one can easily change active status on partitions, images partitions to your choice of media etc etc. PS I am in no way affiliated with the product. I just like to acknowledge excellent software when I see it.
