Yeah, but if they read the whole thread, they will see things like 'I am not a programmer' and 'I have been programming for 2 months'. As well as seeing a ton of programmers telling the guy he has no clue.

I would suggest applying to people threatening to offshore, and provide them with links to conversations on the CP forums like the guy in the ASP.NET forum right now who wants to operate a scanner over the web and tried it with var scanner = document.getElementById("myScanner"); scanner.scan(); Let them look at that and ask themselves if that's really worth $7 an hour.

Yeah, it was pretty funny, but some moron is paying this guy and thinks he's going to get a usable website out the other end.

I am relatively fresh out of uni and in my first job since graduating. However my probation period comes to an end tomorrow and due to the fact that a couple of the production staff have had their hours reduced I do not hold out much hope of still being employed come 5 o'clock tomorrow. Can anyone advise me on the best way to seek employment? I got my current job after applying to an advert in the local paper, but most weeks and especially in these times, these adverts are becoming more and more rare. Obviously I want to avoid agencies if possible but what are the alternatives?

Most of my work has come from Code Project, from people who contacted me over articles I had written. I'm not sure how that would work today, CP is a lot bigger, at the time, I had the only image processing articles here. However, there's still no reason why you can't approach companies directly and ask them if they are hiring. If you do that, try to think of ways to make them think you're more innovate than desperate, if you don't come across as something out of the ordinary, why would they hire you instead of waiting and doing interviews when they want someone ?

agencies suck beyond belief, but unless you can get something by word of mouth they are just about your only option. Don't take any s*** from them. Get your CV out to as many of them as possible, don't rely on just 1 (but personally I only bother with dedicated computing/IT ones). Talk directly to the company rather than the agency where ever possible, and remember that agencies they are out for themselves and not for you.

You need to use the agencies, really. Most companies don't advertise directly - they only use agencies. The main reason for this is that the agency provides a filtering service - removing the applications that do not meet the spec set out by the company, and the company does not want to do this filtering themselves.

I'm not sure how it works in the UK, but in California there are web services such as indeed and dice.com that work very well at posting local jobs. But don't listen to me. I got a job via indeed and it sucks big time.

You could always just try writing a nice letter to companies that you'd be interested in working for. Include a copy of your resume and make sure that you write 3 or 4 paragraphs in you letter about yourself, why you want to work for them, what you can offer etc. Don't forget to make reference to their line of business, their company and stuff like that. Spend 10 minutes on their website so you can add a few things into your letter that make it look like you really know what you're talking about. Either that, or sit on your hands until an agency finds you a data entry computer job for $5 an hour. ;)

I got hired at a university job fair. (I was invited to an interview actually resulting in getting hired) If your school organizes such fairs do go. Also talk to your professors. They usually know who's hiring and they do have much better connections then you do. My university also has a career center where companies post job descriptions for students. Most of those are part time jobs, or internships or whatever but some are actually decent. Talk to your college friends and see if the companies they are working for are hiring. Lastly, go online. There are plenty of job sites and a lot of companies post jobs on those. It will be very difficult to get a job from one of these sites, but do try. Focus on smaller companies, often they are more willing to hire someone fresh out of college because they have limited budgets.

Polish your resume (cv) and do lots and lots of research for different companies. If you already know what kind of work you want to do, concentrate on that. Try to get hold of the hiring manager. In the end, it's a matter of lots and lots of contacts. I've had good luck with agencies, but that's because I only talked to recruiters who knew what they were talking about. Be aware that there are companies that hire ONLY through recruiters. (One scam are recruiters who simply repost job postings they find. They're the useless ones. What you need to find are the recruiters with actual contracts and/or experience with the companies you are interested in.)

www.monster.co.uk I'd look at the job listings first and apply directly to any companies you can, before uploading your CV and taking the deluge of calls from agencies.
