Today is Bike To Work Day[^]. How many of you commuted to work under your own power this morning? This is the second time this week I rode in; I've got a 12 mile (one-way) commute. And no, this does not include you yahoos that telecommute from home in your bathrobes and bunny slippers; quiet down! :-D

Ha ha ha! I put another hundred solo miles on the SUV today!! :-D I did bike sometimes when I was in southern California, particularly when it was a three mile commute.

I'm sorry! I hope you find yourself in the same position, one day. It really is wonderful to have so much "private" time!

Oh my. The worst I've ever seen was some pretty amazing road rash. That's why I yell "HELMETS!" at parents with kids on the bike path, when either of them aren't wearing a helmet. Adults on their own I figure are old enough to be responsible for protecting themselves. Parents with kids ought to set a good example and wear a helmet themselves, and damned well should force the kids to wear one.

When I used to do a lot of aggressive inline skating[^] at the skatepark, I was always amazed by the kids that wouldn't wear helmets, even though the park rules explicitly required it. I once saw a kid just flip backwards off his skateboard and whack the back of his head on the ground. I heard the *smack* of his noggin on the concrete. X| He was fine, just a bit shaken up and probably had a killer headache. Once I saw he was ok and was starting to get up, I just rolled over to him, looked him in the eye and tapped on the side of my helmet, before skating away. He told me to "go away", using slightly more colorful language. Imagine your skates sticking when you're doing this[^

I'm pretty sure they can arrest you for behaviour like that over here. And you have to sign some sort of register thingy.

I did every day this week. But I have been riding to work for a year now. Amazing how much you save on fuel. Plus lost 50 pound along the way.

It sounds like you were lucky. One of the regular bike commuters here where I work was hit about ten years ago. He spent several weeks in the hospital, and has the most amazing scar running around the side of his head. I'm religious about wearing a helmet. I spilled the bike two years ago, and was knocked out for a few seconds. I probably would have had a skull fracture without the helmet.

I happen to a survivor of that, bear in mind that I'm deaf and wear a hearing-aid, plus wear glasses (nobody aint perfect!) and a car zoomed past me, then slowed down to take a leftbut unfortunately, i do not hear anything on my right side and smack, I was flying over the bonnet... no helmet mind you...and ended up breaking my little finger on my right hand as that was the side of impact, the wing mirror on his car was completely clipped off...ouch! had to sit down for a while and then a passer-by on foot who happened to be a solicitor offered me the opportunity to sue the car driver for compensation (he witnessed it all) I declined and got back on the bike, the bike survived, only the handle ended up a bit crooked....

I am. :) I fell out of bed, stumbled into the kitchen for coffee, and then commuted into the lounge where I started work.... ;P
