64bit OS 32bit SQL Server SP3 Question
-
I have Vista 64bit and I just re-installed SQL 2005 32-bit, which all I have, and I am curious which SP3 I should install. The x32 or x64? Are they OS or SQL Server dependent or does it matter? I am leaning toward the x64 version because of the OS. Thanks, Chris

I'd say the x86 one because you used the x86 version of SQL Server. I would hope that the installer would check you had the right product installed before spewing its detritus all over your hard-disk, but that's probably just a forlorn hope...

If your SQL sever installation is 32 bit, then you must of course install the 32 bit service pack.

But the service-pack is not for the OS, is it? It's for SQL 2005, which is 32 bit, so you must use the 32 bit one. In any event, if my experience is anything to go by, it won't install anyway. I've tried at least 5 times, with no luck.

Knowing microsoft it'll probably replace a load of 64-bit shared components with 32-bit versions. Or maybe, like the sharepoint service pack (see http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/05/22/sharepoint_sp2_glitch/) it'll transform it into a CTP/trial version.

This sort of thing doesn't inspire confidence, does it? With all the testing they're supposed to do, I'm amazed nobody spotted this. The more I hear about problems that CPians, and others, have with MS, and VS in particular, components/Apps, the more I wonder if MS devs actually use this stuff.

Some of the SP3 2005 installs will actually report wrong machine type after it completes (DOH!), especially x64 and itanium configs. Thus be careful, I had to resort to a complete reinstall but at least SQL Server installers are pretty well designed for complexity they handle, and never wipe out anything of serious value. Must have been some shipping or platform detect problem.. If only Vista installer and hardware checking was as 10% good as SQL Server's, perhaps all the bloat written in .NET might have been worth a huge penalty on *Server* systems.. Hang on, naah, it is as valuable as WordPerfect in DOS today. Again, it is incredible that in this day and age you can see that UI rendering as you launch the app. Bravo managed-guys.. more of that "innovation", please.
