I was just browsing - OK, drooling - over training gadgets and saw the new Polar FT80 HRM[^]. I'm in love. Anyone seen any wicked cool gadgets? I'm in the mood to window shop improbably priced gadgets. :sigh:

The point is to help you, objectively, understand how your body is going. I cycle a lot and I use a HRM religiously when doing time trials or when hill climbing. For rides like these that are short and intense (45 mins - 2 hrs) you want to be able to go as hard as you can sustainably so you need to know, and keep under, your lactate threshold so that you are not burning more energy than you can produce. You may feel fine at the start but if you're way over your LT then you can suddenly hit a wall. Or you may be going hard thinking you're going harder than you are, but a quick glance shows you've got a couple of percent left in the tank which can make a big difference. Similarly, when training, you want to train above a certain level to get used to anaerobic exercise, or you may need to do a recovery ride and ensure you stay well below, say 70%, without unconsciously sneaking higher and hence ruining the recovery effect. It may seem like a crock, but HRMs are amazingly powerful tools when used correctly.

Hell, sounds like you've made a science out of it -- and I can see that that would be half the fun :) I cycle a lot, too, but mainly because it's such a great way of getting around in NL -- there are cycle paths everywhere, even going from city to city, and it's much prettier and more enjoyable than sitting in a car on a motorway (and, for 4-5 hours a day, it's probably faster than driving). Not too many hills around for more intensive cycling, though, and I don't think the missus would appreciate it too much if I turned the heat up and left her in my dust. I don't need a gadget to tell me that that would be bad for my health!
