Yes, thats the plan, but not at this stage, thats in the next release. I have to go with hard coded at the moment.

One suggestion, based on your choices: Red: Deleted Light blue: To Be Confirmed Dark blue: Confirmed Light green: Despatched Dark green: Complete Yellow: Invoiced The most common color blindness is red-green, making it impossible to separate those colors. Might be worth some consideration...

I don't think this is a programming question, so hopefully OK to ask an opinion here. I need to show a status/colour for some orders in my application. Deleted To Be Confirmed Confirmed Despatched Complete Invoiced What colours would you recommend that indicate the above? I thought Red for deleted, Blue Confirmed, Green Despatched... Struggling with the rest, it may not seem important, but I think some users tend to associate certain colours with a status/urgency, and no, letting them choose their own is not an option... I'm not good with colours :)

Hi Rickyjos, I like Kakan's suggestions. One thing you didn't tell us, however, is whether the background color can vary per item which opens up many more possibilities. Here's a few thoughts : 1. Deleted : show gray type on white background 2. if there's a sequential order of steps here : i.e., : to be confirmed => confirmed => complete => invoiced => despatched use some range of shades of the same color as these (hypothetical) steps are grouped in some way you think appropriate. best, Bill

What Bill said, and then some. The order in which these states occur really does dictate a lot. I'd say you need to make the colors fairly muted or this will look like a hot dog stand on crack no matter what colors you pick. Deleted should be Grey or Dark Grey. Deleted items don't require action. Hence you pick a 'non-action' color. You should reserve Red for items that need action so I wouldn't use it at all and keep it around for when the users make a change that requires you to build a second status for 'rush' or 'normal'. Red can then be for anything the company needs to expedite for whatever reason. Likewise you know that the orders are going to accumulate in two categories; Confirmed (while someone assembles them) and Invoiced (after they are all done). So your screen will be awash with whatever these two colors happen to be. Or if you know they'll accumulate in some other way based on the business type...well you can see perhaps the logic here. I'd go with kakan's suggestions except... Invoiced - Orange Deleted - Grey Also, most order systems I know Complete the order (completely assembled) before Despatching it. But I've seen some that allow you to ship incomplete. So that's what these terms mean to me. I'd also say make the Deleted and Invoiced orders have an italic font, if you have any control over that aspect. That tells the user that these orders are no longer "In Play".

Hello Bill, I can definitely play with the background colour as well. I really like the "shades of the same color idea" for each similar process, similar to Kakan's suggestion, I think I will work on that idea. Thanks for the input.

I guess it depends if the application is used by men or women. If it's for women then you can use seemingly identical shades of orange and call them things like: orange, tangerine, kumquat, satsuma and they'll instantly know which one's which. If it's for guys you'll need to stick to Black / White and ROYGBIV. Russ

White for the invoiced if you are going to use colour as this is the end state.

Yeah, thats what I thought until my last client blasted my colour selections. Maybe I am more colour blind than I thought... I guess I will just try and go for the some colours that I think aren't to "out there". And maybe not ask my wife again who thought pink must be good for something.

Pink is often used for delivery notes. It might have had a USian think it was a pink slip though

I would actually avoid using just colours, and provide some other representation as well, other wise abotu 1 or 2 in every hundred users will find your colours meaningless due to color-blind-ness. But to answer your question I would have: Deleted - grey strikethrough To be confirmed - red Confirmed - orange Despatched - purple Complete - blue Invoiced - faded green. Faded because after invoicing it is less important than the others.

How about red for To Be Confirmed to emphasise that the user needs to do something, and grey for the deleted ones so they fade into the background a bit, depending on whether the deleted records are important or not?
