The police only act when people complain. Allegedly, most of the attacks are never reported to police. But complaints about police inaction are a staple of politics, in Australia and many other places. Maybe the police lack resources, maybe they want an easy life, maybe they are afraid of igniting conflict with particular ethnic groups, maybe they are poorly led...

Its a given that police must act upon a complaint. I find it sad though that a police force is so impotent. Slightly OT: I wish Illion would read this. This is a response, something that has backing to it, not like his post.

It's US centric because US citizens talk about their politics. On the other hand almost every discussion of football I've seen in here has not been about the American version which suggests that when those of you hailing from the far sides of the puddles care about something you will talk about it whether the USAians do or not.

My mentee from last year was a quiet Indian student, and he was assaulted and robbed here in Brisbane for his wallet and mobile phone... I'd have to say that for the large proportion of Indian students that I have met, they do provide a target for scumbags, due to their soft-spoken nature and reluctance (generally) to fight back...

And the fact that the gangs know that most inhabitants of Australia are unarmed. A few years back Florida was suddenly beset by a number of car-jacking/robberies of tourists shortly after they left the airport. Turns out they were identified by the rent-a-car stickers on their vehicles and targetted by Hispanic gangs because Florida had just passed a concealed carry law. But tourists fresh off the plane would be unarmed so they were fair game. These days if you rent a car at the airport, there's no identifying marks on it to advertisie your unarmed status.

Oh man, you really don't want to get too involved in Arab politics. It'll give you a whopping headache by the time you grasp a bit of it. Complicated, does not begin to describe it and yet, it can be easily expressed by saying that the majority of the leaders are influenced by their own greed and extreme polarization of the population into many factions.

You have Muslims from all over the world. Stereo-typing them as Middle Easterners is a sign of lack of knowledge and understanding. In addition, you cannot call a religious group an ethnicity. You wouldn't call a Muslim from say the USA or from India or Uzbekistan a Middle Easterner.

So a change of 6% would eliminate a "massive" swing? That must be the new math I heard about. . . Christian, there certainly are people who worship at the shrine of St. Obama, but most of them would have been quite content serving as acolytes of St. Hilary as well. The "massive swing" voters were, in large part responding to their deep discontent with Bush, and operating in line with a fine old American tradition called, "Throw dah bums out!" Certainly the Republicans who offered more of the same old, with an emphasis on the old, gave the electorate no real reason to reject Obama. The American press (and even more so the overseas press, I imagine) will not cover in detail - or even admit in some cases - that there is slowly growing discontent with Obama both on the left and on the right. The problem with having promised to be all things to all people is that sooner or later some little kid says, "The Emperor has no clothes!"

To be fair, it's the largest majority since at least Reagan. And in terms of congress, well how long has it been since either side had a filibuster proof majority in both houses? Use of the word "massive" does seem a bit ridiculous though. A significant swing (from a fraction of 1% majority for the Republicans, along with a small majority in the House and Senate, to today's sitiuation) would seem a more reasonable description than "massive".

Absolutely true, but not nearly as large as Nixon's 49 state sweep in 1972 - and we all know how that turned out. Or maybe not. Some of the rhetoric and plans going around now remind me of what was being said 150 days after that election. But at least you and I have memories.

Really? Interesting. So, Arabs are the ones beating up on Indian kids? They're starting gangs and are fighting in turf wars? I'm not arguing with you, but why would the fear of being politically incorrect stop the police force from doing the right thing and apprehending these assholes?

Unfortunately yes but thats not to say all the Arabs here are in gangs or behave this way. The last few days 100's of Indian students have been gathering in the streets in one particular area looking for groups of Lebanese to beat up. It goes both ways. There is a Jordanian guy at work who lives near this particular area and was telling me he wont go shopping at night now out of fear. It's a sad situation. In relation to the police they are more than happy to arrest anyone. What they wont do is admit that this problem is occurring between two groups that identify by race and attempt to resolve it or improve the situation by involving the leaders of these sub-communities.
