My mentee from last year was a quiet Indian student, and he was assaulted and robbed here in Brisbane for his wallet and mobile phone... I'd have to say that for the large proportion of Indian students that I have met, they do provide a target for scumbags, due to their soft-spoken nature and reluctance (generally) to fight back...

And the fact that the gangs know that most inhabitants of Australia are unarmed. A few years back Florida was suddenly beset by a number of car-jacking/robberies of tourists shortly after they left the airport. Turns out they were identified by the rent-a-car stickers on their vehicles and targetted by Hispanic gangs because Florida had just passed a concealed carry law. You have Muslims from all over the world. Stereo-typing them as Middle Easterners is a sign of lack of knowledge and understanding. In addition, you cannot call a religious group an ethnicity. You wouldn't call a Muslim from say the USA or from India or Uzbekistan a Middle Easterner.

Use of the word "massive" does seem a bit ridiculous though. A significant swing (from a fraction of 1% majority for the Republicans, along with a small majority in the House and Senate, to today's sitiuation) would seem a more reasonable description than "massive".

Unfortunately yes but thats not to say all the Arabs here are in gangs or behave this way. The last few days 100's of Indian students have been gathering in the streets in one particular area looking for groups of Lebanese to beat up. It goes both ways. There is a Jordanian guy at work who lives near this particular area and was telling me he wont go shopping at night now out of fear. It's a sad situation. In relation to the police they are more than happy to arrest anyone. What they wont do is admit that this problem is occurring between two groups that identify by race and attempt to resolve it or improve the situation by involving the leaders of these sub-communities.
