vista and read only (or maybe locked?) files...

Hate to break the news to you, but this has been a bug in all versions of NT/Win32/NTFS, though it's usually a directory that gets "locked" by something preventing you from deleting it.

well, i've been copying usbstick files in xp for ages and it's never reared it's ugly head. i don't doubt ya, though.

I've not had it [directory locking] happen on USB sticks, though I did have XP completely corrupt a USB stick a few months back. (I still have the damn thing sitting next to me; nobody trusts it for daily work so 16GB are sitting there unused. I'd like to buy it and take it home to archive my pictures and music, but my company doesn't understand that concept.)

If you want the problem solved, you'd better provide accurate information; what is the destination of your copy? which file causes the problem, the source or the destination? and what exactly are the symptoms? SORRY! And yes. I hate vague complaints. :)

guilty as charged. but I don't really see anything lockin' it... It's a regular ole html file copied from a usbstick originally from an xp box. When i use ole wordpad to save it, I get the document is in use by another application and can not be accessed. I tried out that "unlocker" app mentioned above in the thread. Nothing's locking the file. The owning dir is locked by explorer twice. And the dir above that, twice also. No idea why :( (again, sorry!)

Huh? What does that mean? How do you come to that observation? locked twice?? Anyway, there are many possible causes which I will not try and list here; and as you persist in not providing any details... :omg:

Ah, see - there's your problem. You must learn to love it. Not just tolerate it, but truly love it, spend your days actively working for its goals and toward its great purpose. Then, and only then, will your suffering end.
nice app. but although the file has no locks and i unlocked all parent dirs i still get the document is in use by another application and can not be accessed dang. Oops - reply on wrong thread :( but yeah, must drink koolaide...

it's still a wild guess, but this[^] may apply. If not I recommend you start looking into these[^]. Do you have IIS? and what do you have to do to WordPad in order to get the message "the document is in use by another application and can not be accessed"? BTW: does a reboot change anything? :)

Ok, I'm sorry to bring this up. I've hit google and can't find the definitive source of my problem. I'm on vista business. A frackin file i copy from my usb stick keeps getting locked or set to readonly or SOMETHING for no apparent reason that I can see. Has anybody else suffered through this? My guess is yes. SORRY! And yes. I hate vista. ...Steve
in my limited experience, the contents of system directories (all of the "Windows" directories & most of the "Program Files") of Vista are normally set to read-only at the user level. Does the security information carry over from one NTSF file system to another? Maybe check the security settings of the file after you copy it?

OK, here are a few experiments for you to perform: 1. first copy file as usual 2. make sure WordPad refuses to save 3. now try renaming file with Windows Explorer 4. then try deleting file with Windows Explorer 5. wait 10 seconds (more if file is greater than 1MB) 6. repeat step 2 7. repeat step 3 8. repeat step 4 please report success/failure on steps 2,3,4,6,7,8 Also: try WordPad on another text file with a different extension copied into the same folder. EDIT: just read your latest message; way to go! /EDIT :)

Oh man I'm so sorry :( I figured out what I was dorkin' up. Ya knowwww vista's preview of the selected file in win explorer? Over there on the right? Well, although the "unlocker" app mentioned reports no locks on it, Explorer is doing SOMEthing during that preview. When I edit the file and pick another file to preview, I can save just fine. Aaaargh !! I'm so dumb X| ...Steve

Vista works out it's coming from removable media. You will also find there are locations you can't copy to. You can right click the file once it's copied onto your PC and push a button to say you trust the file.
