Could be interesting. My hosts accounts are 100% linux/apache. So, if you and Jon decide to do the IIS/.net stack I might not be able to host it. I'll see what I can do anyway.

Since I couldn't reply to the 'shots fired' post let me say it here. You're a good man. (By my reckoning at least :) ) [Edited for a stupid typo :) ]

Hi Rich :) Been a while my friend, how have you been faring? To be frank, I don't give a hoot anymore whether people like my posts or not. I know what I post and I know who I am and what I represent, if they don't like that, well, too bad.

Faring OK  Regarding CP, shame, it was once a great site. Gone downhill somewhat in recent months. Makes me wonder if Maunder has taken his eye off the ball, and coupled with that, those external blogs now being converted into CP articles, is in my opinion, making the offerings from CP appear sloppy and unprofessional.

I'll be more than happy to help that way too, though I'm a bit rusty with PHP. Besides, isn't there a mod-asp for apache?

Rob has quit CP; I'm pretty close to walking; a number of folks have said that they don't come here any more because of the insane hatred of this forum by Heinze and Hailey, and the kind of response it garners from the rest of us. I said once that I was considering starting another website called the Soapbox. And Rob just sent me an email suggesting I do so. If I did, it would be set up so anyone could read it, only members coud post; the terms of service would specifically ban being a link monkey and personal attacks, and Ilion and CSS would never be allowed to join. Is there any interest in my doing this?

I worry that CP in general is fractured. How would you stop anyone from joining your soapbox ? Personally, I think we should not be responding to CSS, because I honestly believe we're only making his mental illness worse, or at least, keeping him bound to it. Chris made his feelings known when he hid this place. Meanwhile, the lounge is very quiet. I think we as a community need to discuss what moderation means, and what needs to be moderated, in what way, to make this place not be owned by a few trolls. Perhaps if we all went away for a month or so, the trolls may give up and leave ?

Believe it or not, this forum could be made members only. Right now that would mean only you, I, and Rob could post here. . . . But that's a start. Anyway, it's the easiest thing in the world. If those two bad smells could follow, I wouldn't even contemplate making a move. I'd just leave.

You're as moderator. What does that mean to you? The community can't make you do anything you don't want to do or not do anything you want to do. Every puerile post Ilion makes, every insane conspiracy theory that CSS posts drive the "community" away. I think we either need really to moderate this forum - i.e. delete every post Ilion and CSS make, or move on. Either will shut them up. Once most of us clear out, Chris will shut it down since he's already made it quite clear

It means I've been given a responsibility to uphold community standards, which in turn means there needs to be discussion if the community as a whole feels there's a standard I need to uphold. It means that we need to discuss, as a community, if, for example, someone who just posts links, should have their posts deleted. I have no idea what happened this morning ( still ), but, to me, being a mod means having a power I'd prefer not to use, and a feeling that when I do use it, I want to know that the community as a whole, tends to want me to do what I'm about to do.
Oakman wrote:

Well, that's true, I guess. But, you're implying an abuse of power ( again, I am aware *something* has happened, and I don't know what, I am trying to answer this as if nothing had happened, that is, being frank and honest with no intended overtones ). I could just delete every post I see from CSS, although that would probably only feed his illness, just as entertaining him, does. But, that's not what the community wants, so I don't do it.
Oakman wrote:

Well, in fairness, we're locked away, CP's dirty little secret. It's a shame that those two own this place, and I wonder, if we all left, how long it would take them to move into the Soapbox 2.0 and just post the same stuff there, but I suspect that Chris mostly feels this place is allowed to exist to keep the trolls contained.
Oakman wrote:

I have honestly asked at times what people think for the same reasons, those two do take over this forum. However, if we ignored them, wouldn't that stop them posting ? That's what I am doing with CSS now, and I am moving in that direction for Ilion. But, others keep responding, which makes me assume that there are a lot of people who come here to poke sticks at the retards. I disagree with it. I think CSS has actual mental/psychological issues that he should get addressed, and instead, he is encouraged by the people who attack

I have started threads asking what people want, and they have not spoken up. I did see this coming, but I didn't want to impose my own standards, without a green light from the community.

Agreed. My thread on post frequency was written with the same things in mind. However, again, my biggest fear as a mod, is overstepping the mark. I've asked for a guideline, and not really gotten one that required action from me.

This statement is false

Everybody agrees - but almost everybody thinks they can make an exception for themselves - just this once. And then everyone else chimes in (including me, I'm not claiming any special strength of will here.) It's easier for to walk away. Really the only question left (for me) is not whether I walk away like so many already have, but whether it makes sense to start a new site.

So? You act on your own and out of your own sense of what is proper. If you're wrong and you are overstepping your bounds, you'll hear about it and/or Chris will terminate your position. Or, you stand around the way all of us have, and watch those two drive away most of the people whose posts make worthwhile reading. Or, like Rob, you decide that the site isn't worth trying to save. Depending on groupthink to tell you what you should doesn't fit my image of you. As for me, I've pretty much had it. Your thread day before yesterday made me understand why fewer and fewer posts are worth reading - too many have already left, or almost left. My thread today made me realise how many people are tired enough of the present situation to walk away, too.
