Netscape 6?

I was just going through the browser stats and it seems that barely anyone is using NS6. Quick comparisons: There are only 50% more NS6 viewers as IE3 viewers, and there are more than 6 times as many IE4 viewers as NS6. The ratio of IE 5 to NS6 is around 134:1. Chris, IMHO, the Code Project looks and works the best on IE. Netscape is OK, but I tend to prefer the whole look and feel of the site (because it is subtly different) when using IE. Brian Hart

I'm waiting on Mozilla to finish up their development and release a 1.0 product, then I'm off to try to port some of my IE objects to XPCOM.

LOL! I was just thinking the other day that I was so totally a Netscape kinda guy up until a few years ago. Even having Visual Studio 4.0 force me to install IE really grated on me. I guess NS4 and IE4 were fairly close in terms of usability and friendliness (for their time - and this is speaking as a non-web guy at the time too). Would be interesting to hear from any others who running websites as to their experiences with ensuring things work with NS. cheers, Chris Maunder

I just took a look at my own site and got the following for the last month (4.800 sessions): MSIE 5.x (60.23% of all sessions) Unknown (10.06% of all sessions) Netscape 4.x (8.45% of all sessions) AOL 4.x (7.05% of all sessions) Netscape 3.x (4.37% of all sessions) MSIE 4.x (3.78% of all sessions) AOL 5.x (3.62% of all sessions) MSIE 3.x (1.08% of all sessions) Netscape 6.x (0.55% of all sessions) Opera 3.x (0.35% of all sessions) Netscape 2.x (0.22% of all sessions) Netscape 1.x (0.15% of all sessions) MSProxy 2.x (0.09% of all sessions) Interesting that people prefer the older netscape versions ;P - Anders

Yeah the world now spins Backward Chris, One Interesting Comparison would be on this site, And others that draw from other geographical confines, As to the difference in the Stats, Maybe People have chosen IE and Bill was Right about the Browser should being packaged with the OS. As It is pretty useful having the browser integrated in the Shell. Regardz Colin

I tried it. It looked kind of cool. But it kept harassing me to do thing I didn't want to or care about. Plus it crashed alot, took over all my file associations and generally pissed me off. I only use Netscape on linux now. Josh josh@schroff.com

I was thinking just the same. I usually have a build of Mozilla no more than a couple of days old on my machine, but I hardly ever use it. IE's integration into the OS makes it so much simpler to use 99% of the time. Mozilla is constantly regressing, and is still so full of memory leaks that it is impossible to use on a day-to-day basis (I pity the poor developers eating their own dogfood). The main problem appears to have occurred at the beginning of the project - features were added and added in a remarkably uncontrolled manner. Checkins abounded without proper automated testing for years, and now they are trying to overcome the massive resource leaks, mysterious bugs and undefined functionality that bedevil the program. Interestingly, IE is now on what appears to be an iterative cycle of improvement. Smaller, faster, more stable, more standards compliant. We see new versions every few months, each better than the last - not perfect by any means, but better. Is that NS competition? No - I would say not. I believe that MS needs its browser to be superb, as it is such an important part of its platform now. Therefore, they focus on getting it better.
