I was browsing around and found that at the moment, I can get a little more powerful server at 1 & 1 for a lot less than I currently pay with Server Beach. Anyone use their dedicated servers before? The model I am currently looking at is an: Athlon 4200 2 GB RAM 2 x 250 GB HD 2000 GB per month bandwidth for $69 per month. My current server with Server Beach is $119!

I've used them. Woe betide you if you ever need to call their tech support. First you will spend a good hour or so either on hold or being passed around various first line incompetents out in India who will be capable of doing little more than reading from the FAQ section of their website. Then if you manage to hang on you will be directed to someone in their second line who will demand to know your root password or they won't help you. Beyond that are some people who do seem to know a bit about what they're doing but will refuse to acknowledge the existence of any problem. I didn't get any further with my problem. One of the servers was suffering repeated failures and data loss, but the only thing 1&1 could do about it was re-image it every time, which never actually fixed the problem. I was too busy with other work to spend any more time on it. Having said all of that, though, when things are working they do seem to provide decent servers at a decent price and will let you manage them as you wish.

I used 1and1.co.uk for about a year. I stopped using them because I no longer had the need for a server. The box itself and the internet connection were every bit as good as i expected for the money. In the time I used them everything worked fine and the odd thing i needed to get sorted (transferring domains, routine config changes etc) could be done over the web and went smoothly, I never needed to contact their support so can't comment on that side of things.

We've been running two dedicated Windows servers with them for approx 3 years (using around 40gb's bandwidth a month) and as far as uptime and value for money go we've never had a problem and would definately use them again. However, as was pointed out by Dan already I pity anybody who needs to use their support line, the only time I remember ever having a problem it took nearly 2 hours of arguing with their support for them to realise they had a problem with DNS resolution (I ended up fixing it myself by pushing requests through OpenDNS instead.) I use their 'Instant Mail' email servers for a few accounts and it's bee rock solid reliable for nearly 5 years. At one point early on I had what turned out to be a DNS issue and had to call them. That was not a pleasant experience, but otherwise very good.

My general experience with 1&1 (germany) is that it's not bad, and a reasonably good but not very good choice. It's totally ok for my home/personal stuff. Business experience with managed servers is less than stellar. No problems with server availability or bandwidth etc (we don't need much, either). The support is clearly aimed at people who "don't know", rather than "know how to, but want to outsource the work", which causes me some agony and frustration.

Don't attribute to stupidity what can be equally well explained by buerocracy.
