Doom 3 sucked
Never played it, but just curious why you thought it sucked? I messed with the demo, a long while back, and thought it seemed pretty good.

Buddy of mine had this, and I recall the initial release gave him all sorts of problems, but after they released the first set of fixes, those problems went away ... for him.

Bad Astronomy |VCF|wxWidgets|WTLDoom 3: It was very dark visually; I don't mean moody dark, but like the gamma was half of what it should have been. The level design was poor. Levels were extremely repetitive. Too much running back and forth in a level for no apparent reason. (This made the repetitiveness of the levels even worse.) The story was really weak. Normally, I don't care about this, but this was exceptionally bad. Like most games, there were really great sections of Doom 3 (same with RTCW) but they were far too few and far between. [Added: Also remembered that the texturing seemed more obvious that other games at the time. The entire 3D experience seemed one generation behind. It would have been state-of-the-art for 2001/2002, but not 2004. I, and many others, believe this is one the scenes were made so dark; to hide the out-of-date graphics. I will grant that it was less disappointing than Crysis and I did sell it on eBay for more than I paid a coworker.]

Over the past year, Fallout 3 has been a favorite of mine. Amazing storyline, great voice acting, good gameplay, huge replayability.

So basically, it boiled down to running around in the dark with big guns? Glad I missed that.

Seriously? The bodies lying halfway through walls, weapons suspended in the air (especially at the dam), falling "through" the world. You didn't notice any of these?

The dam is one of my favorite chapters, thanks for remembering me.:) And out of the record, there were some little bugs, but how many of the FPS games haven’t some minor “environmental” issues? Even in classics like Gothic II there are places where you are able to jump through a solid stone wall into sewer behind it.

Fortunately my wife plays video games, too! :-) You know, I've played Fallout 3 for almost a year now and I still haven't finished all the side quests. And now I'm starting to play some of the add-on packs -- Broken Steel, The Pitt, Anchorage -- this is a great, great game. My only beef is the occasional freezes on the PC version.

Heh... iD Software is a legend, their early games and code releases responsible to a large degree for much of my initial interest in software development. In many ways, it's surprising they lasted this long... Back in the days of the original Doom and Quake, Bethesda was putting out some really fun games that, unfortunately, lacked much of the stability found in the iD games. Judging by the comments on this announcement, this has remained true in the years since... If the two companies are able to share some knowledge and talent under a common owner, then this could actually be a Good Thing.

Sounds like the Doom i remember... :-\
I don't remember it being Dark? Did they have Dark graphics back then? I remember: Green, Blue, Red ... some yellow ... bright flashes of light ... loud nosies and screaming ... and that was just me waking up in my apartment, then I'd turn on my computer ...

That was back in the days of 256-color palettes. There were different palettes for different gamma levels, different power-ups, etc. But on a well-adjusted monitor, in a dark room, it was perfect...
