"The Chrome operating system will run in a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel..." Running a new UI on top of a UNIX derivative, what an original idea! (I'll bet Apple wishes they thought of doing that.) :)

"Google intends to rely on help from the community of open-source programmers to develop the Chrome operating system, which is expected to begin running computers in the second half of 2010." Translation: "They'll do all the work and we'll take all the benefits." Can you count the number of times the word "Google" is used in that article, only in the first few paragraphs? :~ "The Chrome operating system will run in a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel" So what's new? The windowing system? I wonder if they'll also drop X11, which has support for the proprietary NVIDIA and ATI drivers. If they don't, then I don't really see anything else to do than what Microsoft already did when they switched from XP to Vista. Correction: less than that (seems like they also modified the kernel, not just the GUI), and without the bugs, maybe. :)

It isn't a <edit>unique</edit> OS. It's just Chrome running as a windowing system on the usual 2.6 Linux kernel

Just what the world needs: yet another Linux distro, fracturing an already shattered OS space even further.

Now, wouldn't it be great if they did that with Firefox? Oh, wait! I think they already did that[^]. And I also hear it's already part of some BIOS. Also, wouldn't it be great if they made a web browser that started without a hard drive? Oh wait! They also already did that.[^] So what's Google doing that's new then? (still stumped)

In my mind, they aren't. It's simply an attempt to get market share for Chrome. They clearly aren't doing it for profit (apart from the ads on the homepage), because they give the source code to part of the target market

You'd still get the same year-old question: "Can it run my games?" And the same answer: "No", simply put.

What if it becomes a Mac like version of linux with a nice UI? If they get that right then this would actually be news.

Yes, and what if pigs suddenly grow wings, hell freezes over, and Steve Ballmer goes off and marries Sergey Brin. Yep, that's all likely.

With all the JUST talk about linux on the desktop, this could be a big push for that... I could see google having PAID devs working on this... And unlike MacOS, you could install it on your windows hardware... That, and it might not suck... I'm still waiting on a decent c++ compiler and decent drivers before I tuck into linux.
